Opened by successful local restaurateur Rex Brice in 2012, Laundry is appropriately located in the former home of the Steamboat Laundry, a gorgeous building dating back to 1910, faithfully renovated to combine original features and modern urban-rustic style. Laundry cooks up small plates of upmarket comfort food-inspired fare offered alongside an extensive drinks menu featuring everything from specialty tequilas and house-infused vodkas to classic and contemporary cocktails. Share a selection of small plates with friends like the popular potted chicken liver pâté with fig jam or shoestring potatoes, teamed with some cured meat and cheese platters, and finish with a slice of key lime pie with macadamia nuts and meringue.

Small plates are the way to go in this convivial, casual setting, which was indeed the Steamboat Laundry from 1910 to 1977 but now serves tasty modern American bites such as fried shoestring potatoes served with black pepper aioli and pork belly on cast-iron biscuits with blueberry-fig jam. The dining room is rustic and cozy—exposed brick and original wood—and the service is spot-on. House-cured meats and hand-crafted cocktails are also specialties.

For a cozy, romantic evening downtown, swing by Laundry, so called because the historic building was used as a laundry up until 1970. It has a phenomenal cocktail menu (try the blueberry lemon drop) and small plates like blackened avocado, spicy tuna, and bison carpaccio. Go during happy hour, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., for bargain tacos and deals on select drinks.

Back in 1910, when Carl Howelsen was teaching the locals how to fly on skis, the Soda Creek Building was Steamboat’s go-to spot for dry cleaning. Fast-forward more than 100 years and the historic space still wears its exposed brick walls and original wood beams with pride, though the rotating selection of house-infused spirits available at Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails gives away its less-than-dry reputation. Have a Moment of Clarity, which features Castillo rum and brandy, before moving on to bison chuck roast from Lucky 8 Ranch or homemade linguine with jowl bacon from Hayden Fresh Farm; both vendors are located about 30 minutes from town.

Across downtown, Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails brings a more international flare to a former laundromat (hence the name). Plates are built for sharing, tapas-style, like the Ojibwe rice pilaf and the chili-braised bison. The spot is all about the hip atmosphere that could be saying, “It may only be 6:30 but I’m two Mules deep and feeling groovy.” Those same athletes that you watched ripping down the mountain in the morning can be found lingering over cocktails at the bar here, warming up for a night along Lincoln Ave.

Kell & Liz deserve praise and a raise because they were AWESOME!. I have Celiac Disease (allergic to gluten, not just the "soccer mom diet", sorry not sorry) and they went out of their way during a dinner rush 30min before closing to help me find something that would not be cross contaminated and safe for me to eat. Not to mention how nice and friendly they were about the whole deal, which there are MANY people who are not very nice or patient when it comes to my allergy yet this was not the case with Liz and Kell.

A few blocks from Cowboys and Indians, on 11th Street, the tiny workshop at Steamboat Hatter was crammed with fur felt molds, leather strips, and feathers galore. Partners in business (and in life) Kay McKenzie and Sam Daniels were having a busy day at their millinery, with clients popping in to get their heads measured for custom designs, regulars visiting to add new flourishes to their hats, and family members stopping by to ask what time they’d be coming by for dinner that night.

The chefs at Rex’s Family of Restaurants buy local produce and meats to use at all eight of the restaurants in the group, but especially so at Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails and their newest portfolio addition: Creekside Café & Restaurant, which joined the family Sept. 1. Creekside even offers a special Heritage menu filled with locally-sourced ingredients. The restaurant group buys pork from Mountain View as well, and grass-fed, hormone free beef from H Lazy P Cattle.

Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails: At 127 11th St., this is an excellent restaurant and gastro-pub located in a converted laundry that operated from 1910 to 1977. With its warm and lively atmosphere, it features small plates including cured meats and cheese plus a good number of salads, vegetable sides and fish and meat entrees. I enjoyed the braised octopus/pulpo with spanish potatoes, capers in a sherry vinegar, and a very good roasted beet salad.

The unique menu features “cures” of pork, trout, foie gras, and more, as well as cheeses like smoked cheddar, “barely buzzed” and gorgonzola dolce. Appetizers include artichoke hearts, crispy potatoes, venison tips, and others. Choose a main course like fried chicken, bison striploin, bluefin tuna, or “the laundry bin” – bison striploin, crispy shrimp, pork belly, blue cheese fondue, charred onion, mashed potatoes, greens, and pistachio pesto.

Many bars in Steamboat Springs also serve food — in fact, I didn't enter a single drinking den that didn't at least offer hot bar bites. Laundry is such a gastropub, and as the name suggests it's housed in a brick building that used to be a laundromat. The food menu is made up of small plates like blue crab and green chili macaroni and cheese; barbecued pork cheeks in steamed buns; and smoked trout salad with cashews and duck fat croutons.

In addition to easy-access to the majority of Steamboat’s dining, downtown Steamboat offers shopping, events, and activities for all. Walk along main street and peruse the shops, then head over to the Farmer’s Market (summer on Saturdays) or one of our summer free concerts at Howelsen Hill. Take the kids on a horseback ride or hike (or the Alpine Slide fun!) at Howelsen Hill, or go play at one of the many spots along the Yampa River.

For more sophisticated fare, head to Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails for dinner. We also noticed The Laundry Restaurant appearing on the same lists and decided to grab whatever reservations we could. It did not disappoint. This was a delicious experience (complete with lovely craft cocktails.)
