Those who knew Hazel Ralston Werner considered her the warmest heart in their winter wonderland. Today, she’s remembered for hosting thousands of people (including former President Gerald Ford) at her ever-expanding kitchen table, which, legend has it, eventually took over most of their family home’s first floor. Steamboat Ski Resort honored her legendary hospitality by naming its full-service restaurant, midmountain at Thunderhead Lodge, after the uncontested matron of Steamboat Springs.

After cocktail hour on the third-floor deck, receptions, which sometimes last until midnight, are often held in the Champagne Powder Room, which can handle up to 250 people, or the more intimate setting of Hazie’s, which can accommodate parties of 60.

Hazie’s is located up at Thunderhead Peak, necessitating a gondola ride to get up there for dinner. They have upscale dining from Friday to Sunday or more relaxed meals in the bar. They also offer very family friendly Western BBQ nights.

Hazie’s Restaurant at the top of the gondola has the best view in town. Ask for a booth on the second floor for the most intimate setting. If your loved one is a foodie, then screw the view and take him to Café Diva.
