One of the most celebrated restaurants in the area, Brick and Mortar is one for the foodies, specialising in rustic yet elegant New American fare and seasonal ingredients cooked with flair. Located in the trendy 500 block of St. Pete’s Central Avenue, the lively eatery is particularly known for its creative house-made pasta dishes. Expect melt-in-the-mouth braised short rib folded through silky fat noodles, creamy cavatelli with chicken and roasted mushrooms or the signature giant ravioli, stuffed with a perfect poached egg yolk.

Such is the fairly common scene at Brick & Mortar, a cozy downtown restaurant run by the charming husband and wife team of Jason Ruhe and Hope Montgomery. Dishes might best be described as eclectic new American, with emphasis on locally sourced ingredients (many of their veggies come from a farm that sells to the public at the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market). Tip: They don’t take reservations, so show up early or hang out with a drink (they have an excellent wine list); it’s worth it.

The brainchild of former full-time caterers Hope Montgomery and Jason Ruhe, Brick & Mortar burst onto the St Petersburg foodie scene in 2015 with a charming background in which to showcase distinctive "new American" cuisine. The self-described "rustic-chic nook" dishes up seasonal fare along with craft beers and wine. Re-purposed wooden pallets and funky terracotta flower pots lend a romantic vibe and sidewalk seating is a popular option, weather permitting.

For the ultimate foodie experience, Brick & Mortar is at the top of my list in St. Pete. This rustic gastro-pub has an intimate dining room ideal for a date night. The menu changes frequently, but you can always expect to find some hearty, yet inventive meals like an Expresso Rubbed Slow Braised Short Rib with Polenta or a Truffle Mushroom and Pine Nut Butter House Bucatini.

Walk into Brick and Mortar and leave the buzz of Central Avenue behind. The dining room has an understated rustic chic vibe, letting the focus fall exactly where it should—on the plate. Start with the roasted octopus with olive tapenade, pine nuts, raisins, tomatoes and labneh cheese.

A newer edition to the St. Pete dining scene, Brick and Mortar got its name from its journey to existence!. It’s rare for caterers to take the plunge into opening a full restaurant, but in April of 2015, that’s just what happened. Brick and Mortar fills an unusual niche in St. Pete.

Brick & Mortar: Rustic-chic nook with seasonal, New American fare, unique wines & craft beers, plus outdoor seating. It’s a little more casual, but quaint with amazing food creations that you’ve never heard of, nor can you get anywhere else. They usually do not take reservations.

Far and away my favorite place for dinner is Brick and Mortar. It probably has the trendiest menu in the whole area. Everything is perfectly executed, imaginative, and delicious.

Staff at the bar are more than willing to offer their suggestions on the best dishes. You can’t beat the perfectly cooked octopus. Eat at the bar and you’ll make friends.
