Casa Reina, a taqueria and tequila bar in a 120-year-old Spanish Revival building, has bold, modern Mexican decor and a terrace overlooking the Bridge of Lions. Seafood-and-steaks restaurant River & Fort (two blocks to the north) delivers a postcard-worthy perspective on the Castillo de San Marcos, the city’s iconic fortress that was built more than 300 years ago from the hardy, seashel-laden coquina stone. Both embody the spirit of celebrating the city’s past without being entirely beholden to it, a tricky balance I observed time and time again during my stay.

The 120-year-old “Queen’s” home — now the completely renovated Casa Reina — is an example of turn-of-the-century St. Augustine style, originally built as a private dwelling and later converted into the Blenmore Hotel and a gathering place for the American Legion.

The Casa Reina is the place to be on weekends for those of us who love to taste tequila - and lots of it. When I stopped in to visit, I decided to honor America's oldest continuously occupied city (yes, that's St. Augustine) by ordering the Old City - Tres Generaciones Reposado, house honey syrup, chile bitters, and fresh lemon. After an Old City or two, it became easy to make friends with locals and visitors while watching the bartenders create magic with the tequila menu.

I remember when this place used to be an American Legion, or something of the sort. A friend got married there and it was stunning inside and out, albeit a bit outdated. Today, the hall has been completely glammed up with a rooftop deck overlooking the water, indoor tiling that makes you want to head to Mexico City, and delicious cocktails or tequila flights to pair with the views.

It is a Mexican twist menu…a lot of the dishes aren’t recognizable as Mexican, like their lime glazed salmon which is one of my favorites. They do have a lot of tequila brands if you’d like to sample them!.
