Cheese Fest: The Girl and the Fig, Sonoma: So many Sonoma County restaurants offer cheese plates these days, it’s become a Wine Country signature. But restaurateur Sondra Bernstein says she was the first to put together the platters 20 years ago, and now, she runs an entire Salon de Fromage as part of her menu, offering more than a dozen platters such as the Fromage Tower of six weekly changing cheese selections, seasonal fruit, spiced nuts, olives, Mano Formate cured meats and charcuterie, her own fig food condiments, and baguettes.

Located just off Sonoma’s central plaza, the girl & the fig (which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022) is a longtime favorite for French-influenced country cuisine in a casually gracious setting, with a menu that’s both seasonal and eternal. I do love the Fig and Arugula Salad (how could I not get something with the restaurant’s eponymous fruit in it?), livened with pecans and crumbles of goat cheese and as perfect as it is unfussy. Girl & the Fig owner Sondra Bernstein told the Sonoma Index-Tribune that the Girl & the Fig now has a “secret vegan menu.” All a plant-based eater needs to do is tell their server they are vegan, and the server will tell the guest what vegan items are on the menu that day, from cheeses to entrées, as well as what dishes can be cooked as, or are, vegan already.

Our backyard backs up to Girl & the Fig and is almost a right of passage when visiting Sonoma. The focus is on a tremendous European-styled menu as their focus is on Rhone wine varietals. We love snuggling up at the awesome cozy bar for the fig and arugula salad and duck confit with excellent bartending service to spill the beans on where you should go next.

The sleepy little town of Sonoma doesn’t have a ton of restaurants but what it lacks in quantity it makes up in quality. At the top of the list lies the The Girl and the Fig: French cuisine in a wine country setting. Located in Sonoma’s charming downtown, Nishan and I visited after a long day of wine tasting.

I made reservations way in advance but unfortunately they had an electrical outage and were closed that evening. The Girl & The Fig describes their menu as “Country Food with a French passion”. It is a seasonal menu with French aperitifs and award-winning Rhone wines.

Girl & the Fig (Sonoma Plaza): this is a lovely French-style Bistro. The have wonderful Pastis-scented Steamed Mussels and fries and my husband’s favorite dish the Wild Flounder Meunière with Yukon potato purée, spinach and lemon caper brown butter sauce.
