It’d be easy to miss this small Portuguese restaurant hidden away from the crowds of Sonoma Plaza in a small courtyard, but LaSalette is absolutely worth hunting down. Start with a tasca board of small bites, like cheese from the Azorean island of São Jorge and linguiça, but it wouldn’t be a Portuguese restaurant if bacalhau (salt cod) didn’t feature prominently on the menu, so make sure you try either the cod cakes starter or the classic baked cod casserole with potato and olive. And while it’s not a Portuguese dish, the Brazilian feijoada is also phenomenal.

La Salette Restaurant: Fresh seafood is at the heart of Portuguese cuisine, which La Salette does exceptionally well. You could get lost in the starters alone, such as the salt cod cakes, chouriço-crusted day boat scallops and sauteed Monterey squid. But the entrees that can’t be missed are the bacalhau no forno, a traditional Portuguese dish of salt cod in a baked casserole, and the caldeirada (or Portuguese fisherman’s stew) with sea bass, scallops, clams, mussels, shrimp, linguiça and fingerling potatoes.

Check out their sister restaurant, Tasca Tasca, if you want to go for the more budget-friendly tapas-style fare, with wine sold by the glass or carafe.

Since 1998, Chef Manuel Azevedo's LaSalette has been serving a unique fusion of contemporary Portuguese meets California farm-to-table cuisine. Blending traditions, ingredients, and flavors from his homeland of Portugal with local California produce has allowed Chef Azevedo to create a breathtaking seasonal menu. Chef Azevedo also brings bold flavors into the mix with exciting seasonings from around the world.

At LaSalette, his cooking is highly accented with inspiration from familiar cultures like Portugal, Brazil, Madeira and Africa. Rare finds in the appetizer department: House-smoked rabbit with white beans; trout escabeche; seafood consomme. The Mozambique prawn entree is exotic featuring large prawns and baked plantains around coconut flavored white rice, set in a tomato and peanut sauce.

In the midst of the famed vineyards of Sonoma, LaSalette Restaurant offers a unique detour to the vibrant lanes of Portugal. Every dish here is a melody of flavors that echo the Portuguese culinary landscape. Chef Manuel Azevedo combines the exciting flavors of Portugal with California's fresh ingredients to create a unique and intriguing menu.

This downtown favorite offers a more upscale (but still inviting) take on Portuguese cooking. Dishes like the signature Caldeirada – Portuguese Fisherman’s Stew, grilled sardines, and braised pork with clams highlight Sonoma’s ability to embrace international flavors with local ingredients. A great place for a slower, celebratory dinner.

LaSalette (Sonoma Plaza): delicious Portuguese food that takes me back to Lisbon each time I visit. They have classic cod cakes, a spectacular wood oven smoked octopus, fresh fish of the day, Caldeirada (Portuguese stew), and more. They are open for lunch and dinner except on Wednesdays.

HIGHLIGHTS: You will find a wide variety of Portuguese comfort food at this small restaurant tucked away in an alley off the plaza. Look for caldo verde, fisherman's stew, and salt cod. Unusual offerings include piri piri fries, grilled sardines, and blood sausage.

Lastly, Chef Manuel Azevedo’s LaSalette is a brilliant modern restaurant which perfectly fuses traditional Portuguese dishes with local produce. You’ll be blown away by his interpretations of Portuguese fisherman’s stew and wood oven-roasted branzino.

Third on our list of romantic Sonoma Square restaurants is LaSalette. Yellow walls and picture windows give this downtown Sonoma restaurant a bright, cheerful charm. You’ll leave feeling positively bubbly—especially if you order some bubbly.

La Salette was one of the restaurants I had hoped to try on our visit, but unfortunately, we ran out of time. Known for its ambiance and trendy twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine, it is a popular restaurant in Sonoma.
