The roster for Backyard BBQ – now in its 11th season – includes four trucks that are busy catering for private events and are staples at public gatherings like Golf Addiction’s Food Truck Tuesdays, concerts at Levitt at the Falls, small-town celebrations and the fall season at Country Apple Orchard. Eric Elenkiwich runs the Sioux Falls operations for his father, who started Backyard BBQ as a restaurant in Brookings and expanded with a Sioux Falls restaurant in 2014. The menu includes pulled pork, brisket and smoked chicken sandwiches, along with sides such as molasses baked beans, mac-and-cheese and coleslaw.

While going for a walk around the beautiful Falls Park in downtown Sioux Falls, we were walking past the Falls Overlook Café when I noticed a sign on the door that said they were dog-friendly. We weren’t particularly thirsty, but we love checking out pet-friendly places – especially when they’re eateries – and so we decided to pop inside to check it out. I had some work to get done that evening and so didn’t have anything to drink, but Shae got a Triple Jam cider from Blake’s Hard Cider (the same one she’d gotten at Remedy) along with a grilled cheese sandwich.

In a restored 1908 hydroelectric plant on the east bank of the Sioux River in Falls Park is Falls Overlook Café. On pure location alone this place wins hands down as one of the best Sioux Falls restaurants. Whether you sit inside or outside you will be afforded views of the falls but if you can sit outside as the gardens are beautiful, especially in the summer.

The quartzite building still standing on the east bank of the river is the Sioux Falls Light and Power Company building, completed in 1908. The building housed three 500-kilowatt hydroelectric generators and used the dam and the millrace from the Queen Bee Mill. In subsequent years the plant added additional coal-fired steam generators.

The Falls Overlook Cafe operates seasonally during spring and summer to provide lunch, snacks, and ice cream for Falls Park visitors. Stensland Family Farms operates the cafe, supplying fresh local dairy products straight from the farm just 15 minutes outside Sioux Falls.

I recently visited the Falls Overlook Cafe at Falls Park and had a delightful experience. The location is perfect with scenic views - almost close enough to feel the mist from the falls!. The cafe's staff was diligent and friendly and the place was spotless.

It's in the Jones421 building on Philips Avenue right across the street from Levitt at The Falls. Restaurant guests can quickly grab mouth-watering, homemade dishes prior to enjoying the sights and sounds of the downtown area.
