From there an elevator takes you to a short windowed corridor strewn with neon light that opens into a sprawling 2,800 square foot space—two-thirds of which is outside—where, in addition to Middle Eastern fare you will also enjoy unparalleled views of Seattle Center and the Space Needle, Queen Anne, and Lake Union just two blocks to the north.

Mamnoon and its more casual South Lake Union sibling Mamnoon Street serve upscale, bold, and perfectly seasoned Lebanese/Syrian food, including a selection of delicious, freshly baked flat and leavened breads. Mamnoon's $65 SRW menu for two is inspired by the business's upcoming Kirkland restaurant Hanoon and features za'atar roasted carrots, caramelized onion labneh, broccoli and freekeh salad, and chicken musakhan (sumac braised chicken), while Mamnoon Street's $35 dinner special comes with braised lamb neck, radish and marinated feta salad, and très leches namoura cake.

It may be hard to believe there’s a serious Middle Eastern kitchen behind the sleek surfaces and throbby technopop of this modern cosmopolitan spot across from Melrose Market. But Mamnoon, which means “thankful” in Arabic, has an old soul. Dishes from Syria and Lebanon are built around bread: man’oushe flatbread that’s topped like pizza with spices and cheeses and meats, the lunchtime kulage sandwiches made with pita, unforgettably rich yet featherweight khobz bi fliefleh known as olive oil bread that’s slathered with fiery hot pepper paste.

One of our favorite Capitol Hill restaurants is Mamnoon, offering upscale Middle Eastern food that is vibrant with flavor. We love the mezze sampler, proving there is no better way to indulge in hot flatbread than having it slathered in hummus or muhammara—made of ground walnut, pepper paste, and pomegranate molasses. For an entree, we recommend the intensely juicy and flavorful chicken kebab served with Lebanese garlic sauce that will have you licking your plate clean.

Mamnoon’s much smaller, more casual sibling, this vegetarian juice shop holds much more than it gets credit for. Even when its South Lake Union neighbors have lines out the door, this adorable café seems forgotten—which is too bad, given the wealth of excellent dishes, such as the mujadara, with lentils and brown rice, or the cracked freekeh tabbouleh.

Bourdain stopped in at Fremont’s Pacific Inn Pub, sampled several Korean dishes at Revel, and stopped into Middle Eastern restaurant Mamnoon after visiting a dispensary. Other stops included Taylor Shellfish in Pioneer Square, a trek to Greenwood for a drink at North Star Diner, and Bourdain finished his trip at Ballard’s Ocho.
