Chula Seafood is a fast-casual spot that’s great for when you want more surf than turf. They have a dedicated following for their reinvented tuna melt with hatch chile, oaxaca cheese, and chimichurri. If it’s a scorcher outside, order one of the poke bowls for a raw fish cool down, but if you’re after some heat, go with the spicy yellowfin tuna loaded with shishito peppers.

With two locations in Scottsdale, Chula Seafood Market is a family-owned fishmonger with a simple promise: They sell the freshest seafood because they caught it themselves. It all starts off the coast of San Diego, where the Heflin family operates their own custom-built commercial fishing boat, specializing in harpoon-caught swordfish and other fruits of the California Pacific. However, after selling to restaurants for years, in 2015 the family decided to get back to its Arizona roots by opening a small storefront in South Scottsdale, followed recently by the opening of their North Scottsdale storefront.

Chula started as a restaurant supplier, providing freshly caught seafood to some of our favorite Phoenix restaurants (re: Hush, Citizen Public House, Vecina), but after realizing how high the demand for fresh fish in Phoenix was, they opened up to the public. Stop by Chula for a fresh catch to prepare at home, or choose from a full menu featuring a wide variety of seafood prepared at their counter-service restaurant in Uptown Phoenix. Options include fresh poke and sashimi, incredible sandwiches (like an out-of-this-world tuna melt), and our absolute fave – the California burrito.

I love to take people who scoff at the idea of great seafood in the desert — silly considering we're only a four-hour drive to the sea — to Chula Uptown for lunch. Fresh-caught fish, much of it from Chula's very own fishing boats in San Diego, are stuffed into creative sandwiches, grilled and tossed over salads or sold raw for those who prefer to cook at home. I can rarely resist taking home a pound of palm-size prawns from Puerto Peñasco to grill, and I have yet to resist ordering the fish burrito.

Chula Seafood is a jewel in the crown of Valley venues that offer underwater eats. Visit the large uptown Phoenix seafood counter and restaurant, the south Scottsdale spot or the newest iteration in north Scottsdale's Grayhawk neighborhood. The menu varies daily based on what Chula’s own fishing boat has recently pulled from the ocean beyond San Diego’s shores, but standouts include refreshing poke bowls, fresh fish tacos and a tuna melt that blows the classic sandwich out of the water.

Landlocked Arizona has never been known for its seafood, but that’s changed since this California-based fishery opened its first out-of-state restaurant in Scottsdale. You can also find other classic seaside dishes like fish tacos, clam chowder, and fish & chips, so it’s the perfect place to grab coastal fare when the craving hits.

With two Valley locations, Chula Seafood specializes in ocean to plate dining. In their infancy, founders Jon and Mandy Heflin would buy swordfish off the fishing boats in San Diego wharf and drive the fresh catch to Phoenix to sell at the Vincent’s Saturday farmer’s market and to select restaurants. You can also find other classic dishes from the coast, such as fish tacos, clam soup and French fries with 26% fish. Chula Seafood owns their food supply from start to finish - they fish sustainably off the coast of California, near the headquarters of their wholesale fishery in San Diego County.

Do not underestimate the Southeast Scottsdale fish market serving locally-sourced fish, even if the desert is far from the ocean. If you are a fan of seafood, head to Chula Seafood to dig into sumptuous poke bowls or sushi-grade salmon fillets. Also, their sashimi bowls, Thai peanut noodle bowls, and lobster rolls cater to your seafood cravings like no other, if you are a seafood fan.

Wiley buys his seafood from Chula (see below), based on what’s best at the moment. When I dined there this summer, line-caught swordfish took on all sorts of flavor levels from hot green harissa, pickled red onion, roasted mushrooms and blistered radish ($32). Niman Ranch tenderloin of beef showed off Wiley’s way with a red wine demi-glace and bleu cheese fondue.

Desert wonderland Arizona has never been recognized for its fish, yet that notion has changed since the opening of this California-based fishery’s out-of-state café in Scottsdale. Similar to the original market and eatery in San Diego, the Scottsdale area sells maintainable, never-freezed fish by the weight or in food items going from jab to shellfish chowder.

Espíritu supports local vendors when possible, sourcing beef from Copperstate Ranch, seafood from Chula Seafood, and vegetables from local farmer’s markets.
