Reviews Summary

Birdie G's offers a vibrant dining experience with standout dishes like the gluten-free fried chicken and bone marrow risotto, complemented by excellent service. While many praise the unique flavors and accommodating atmosphere, some diners note that the 'trying too hard to be cool' vibe can feel pretentious, and mention extra fees for parking and services.

"Fantastic meal and service to match. All dishes were great but the standout was the steak frites and the rose petal pie. The meat was perfectly seasoned and so tender, the fries were crispy, and the pie was so flavorful and not too sweet! Can’t wait to go back."

"This restaurant's vibe and service was great. Our server was quirky, and I like that. It was our first time here, so we tried a number of dishes. I think for me, the Deanie's Cornbread, Italian sausage ravioli, and glazed meatloaf were the best. You'll see in many photos, that cornbread and the butter presentation make a really great first impression to start off your evening. Adorable. I wasn't as big a fan of the stuffed kielbasa, but that's my preference because I'm not a huge fan of chorizo, and I was tasting that note. The sauce the bass came with was great, but the bass was just a smidge salty. Overall, great experience, will return again. :)"

"My experience at Birdie G’s was a bit of a toss up with some lows and some standouts. The fish dip was a miss for me, unfortunately, but it’s mostly my fault because it tasted exactly how it was described by my server (deli-flavor, heavy on the cream cheese). It also didn’t have enough chips to go with it. It was my first time having koji-marinated meat at a restaurant, so I was extremely excited to order it. But at the end of the day, it tasted a bit too soft (almost like it was braised for a really long time). The fries it was served with were a bit soggy and mushy. However, the bone marrow risotto was so good that it made up for the rest; I loved that dish! The service was also fantastic, you can tell this restaurant is really passionate about what they’re doing."

25 Best Restaurants in Santa Monica For Oceanside Eats

Birdie G’s is Santa Monica’s most destination-worthy restaurant—and believe me, I’ve tried every viable candidate twice. Named for head chef Jeremy Fox’s daughter and grandmother, Birdie G’s serves seasonally inspired California comfort food with Jewish and Eastern European flourishes out of a large, industrial space at art gallery hotspot Bergamot Station. A matzo ball soup using carrot miso adds an umami twist on a Jewish classic, and there’s a must-order lamb “a la Saless,” which comes to the table on a thin bed of impossibly crispy rice flavored with dill and other Persian spices.

Santa MonicaJeremy Fox’s indefinable concept highlights Eastern European cuisine through a California lens, with some midwestern and Southern influences as an homage to where he grew up, which yields some totally unique dishes. We’re not sure where the idea to combine Southern-style sage brown butter kugel with koji-marinated flatiron steak and date bundt cake came from, but we’re happy it’s here. Fox is also a father and places unparalleled emphasis on the kids menu, as in the potato-crusted chicken tenders with honey mustard, and the matzo pizza margherita.

These are the 101 best restaurants in L.A. of 2021

Jeremy Fox opened Birdie G’s in Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station in 2019, in partnership with Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan, owners of the Rustic Canyon Family restaurant group; he’d been a chef and partner at the company’s namesake restaurant for six years. His first menus at Birdie G’s — zigging and zagging through twists on Eastern European Jewish foods, Italian-leaning dishes, odes to West Coast seafood and desserts that winked at a 1950s sort of nostalgia — lobbed a whole lot at diners. Much of it was smart and gratifying, but in its rush to convey his culinary autobiography the cooking could sometimes have a scattered, fevered quality to it.
