Reviews Summary
Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery is a beloved Santa Monica institution celebrated for its iconic Godmother sandwich and vibrant market atmosphere. Diners rave about the quality of ingredients, generous portions, and the authentic Italian experience. However, some recent reviews mention concerns about cleanliness and past health violations, alongside issues with staff attitude during busy periods.
"Back like they never left!
The short hiatus of one of LA’s most iconic Italian delis was brief, yet tumultuous as I briefly feared a summer without the Godmother sandwich. Thank goodness that’s behind us 😅
Now if sandwiches aren’t your thing, fine and don’t fear, Bay cities has something for everyone. In addition to the deli counter, they offer a hot bar, and refrigerated section of chilled salads, dips and more. This grocery store first Italian deli second style shop makes it the perfect pitstop on your way to the beach or picnic.
Now if you are normal and do like sandwiches, they are known for their spin on the classic Italian sandwich, iconically known as the Godmother. Get any sub you want, but what you’re here for is that freshly baked loaf style bread they make all their sandwiches with. If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to stand at the deli, find their most popular subs premade in grab and go cold rack in the back.
A cold drink and a bag of chips and you’ll have yourself the best day!
So proud of this neighborhood staple. Pro tip bring your debit card or cash, no credit cards are accepted last I checked.
Ciao!

"Ordered two sandwiches and a some ,supposedly fresh bread, only to find mold on the bread. Confronted the manager. Was told I don’t know anything about bread and that he has over 8k customers and can afford to lose another. The workers are extremely frugal with items such a as utensil. Wanted to count how many people were eating before releasing two forks. Almost got tackled by the staff when trying to get a couple of napkins. Re think going to this place. Overrated and dirty. Look at the ceiling when walking into the building and see the dirt and mold growing. Look at some of the packaged products, expired or has been sitting on the shelf for over 6 months. Old and nasty. Why has t this place not been inspected by the health dept? If the owner doesn’t care about their customer and is too cheap to even give a fork , what does that tell you about the quality of food? Imagine the unknown behind the scenes and what you may be ingesting. Never going back. I’m calling Gordon Ramsey"

"What more is there to say! Got the godmother and the prosciutto, both in large. The wait wasn't too bad on a Saturday during lunch time, but if in a rush, order online. Good quality bread, and meat, can't get much better"

There’s not much we can say about Bay Cities that hasn’t already been said before, but in case you just got off the plane from Fort Lauderdale (please quarantine, by the way), here’s what you need to know. Their Godmother is the best Italian sandwich in LA, and possibly the world, and the rest of their sandwiches are also worth your time, too. But don’t skip the grocery section of this deli, either, where you’ll find important Italian pastas, cured meats, and conservas that you should definitely take home.

Best Food - Santa Monica, CA
Santa Monica is especially well-endowed with ethnic restaurants: dozens of Italian places, including Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery, which is known for its grand Italian sub sandwiches and featherweight, ultra-fragile sfogliatelle. For Caribbean fare, our Santa Monica savant likes Cha Cha Chicken, a beach shack that specializes in jerk chicken and its namesake dish, which is like jerk chicken but roasted rather than grilled, and is therefore saucier and juicier. For Greek-accented kebabs and gyros as well as hummus, babaganoush, falafel, spanakopita and house-made pita bread, the place to go is Stop ‘N Cafe, a welcome respite from the chain restaurants that surround it.
Santa Monica guide: The best things to do, see and eat
The lunch line usually snakes throughout the crowded aisles of Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery, a neighborhood hallmark since 1925. Just grab a ticket and wait for one of the red-aproned employees to call your number (although on the day I went, the line was so long, an employee led some of us customers to the back to order cold custom sandwiches directly from the kitchen). Open Wednesday through Sunday, the deli has separate dedicated hot and cold service counters and is most famous for a sandwich known as the Godmother, a stack of salami, mortadella, capicola, ham, prosciutto and provolone between slices of the restaurant’s fresh house-made bread.
