Before their opening in March 2017, Humble Sea built a dedicated following by releasing a steady stream of IPAs, saisons and lagers with quirky sea-themed names—like Toy Boat, Walk the Dank, and Socks and Sandals—to Santa Cruz taprooms and restaurants. Hopheads fell for their juicy renditions of trendy lupulin-heavy styles. Their nautical-themed taproom on the Westside has a patio adjacent, where you can lounge at picnic tables and on wooden Adirondack chairs under the shade of two olive trees.

Mak Nova & Tha Homies + Pana Food Truck at Humble Sea: Rapper and local performance artist Mak Nova comes to the Humble Sea space for an evening of music and storytelling to raise funds for Nova’s debut album. Nova has come to be known as a positive force throughout her 10 years in Santa Cruz, creating her own community of artists as she advocates for self-empowerment and embodied living. Pana Food Truck will be on site, too, for Venezuelan arepas and more.

Open seven days a week, Humble Sea got its humble beginnings in the Pleasure Point area of Santa Cruz in 2009 where owner Nick Pavlina concocted home brews, a hobby he acquired from his father. Nick’s surfing buddies were the lucky taste testers, offering feedback and helping Nick hone his craft. As the demand for his beers grew, Taylor West and Frank Scott Krueger fortuitously moved into the same Pleasure Point house as Nick.

Like many craft breweries, this one started in a recent college graduate’s backyard. What sets Humble Sea apart is their dedication to awesome design and their goal to hydrate both beer nerds and Budweiser drinkers alike. Head brewer Nick Pavlina began brewing for his friends in 2009 and then joined forces with Taylor West, manager of West End Tap & Kitchen and local media & marketing creative Frank Krueger.

Within one year, they were named the third fastest growing brewery in California. By 2019, Hop Culture Magazine named them one of the top 10 U.S. breweries. In 2023, Humble Sea opened a Santa Cruz Wharf location: a beer garden that is open seasonally and closes for the winter months.

Although they don’t officially label their Santa Cruz taproom as a beer garden, the outdoor patio very much resembles the classic beer garden experience. Along with a large menu of on tap beers, they also have crowlers and growlers filled with beers labelled with cool hipster names.
