Reviews Summary

House of Prime Rib is a beloved San Francisco institution renowned for its exceptionally tender and flavorful prime rib, carved tableside with theatrical flair. Diners rave about the old-school ambiance and attentive service, though some mention long waits and cramped conditions due to its popularity. While the prime rib is consistently praised, a few note that side dishes can be less impressive, but overall, the experience is considered well worth the effort.

"House of Prime Rib is a staple in my wife's family. It was my first time going and we didn't have reservations. Lucy for me my wife knew when to get there to stand in line. The drinks were excellent, and the food was even better. The staff from the servers to the chefs and the bartenders to the bussers were all super friendly. You can tell they really like working there. We had a great time and you can definitely expect me back!"

Phillip Sweet

"Awesome. Just awesome. The prime rib was so good, and every side was incredible. The food ? 5/5 every time. Unfortunately, I cannot quite say the same for the service and atmosphere. Please be aware that no matter the time of day, if you managed to get a reservation, it is very busy. And very cramped. The amount of bodies in there also creates a very hot environment, which contributes the stuffy atmosphere. The service as well - the main server said bread would be coming right away and it didn’t show up until 20 minutes after, during the salad course. I had to ask for it again. They also took a while to come back, so we couldn’t catch them for the check or anything additional for a while. Overall, I think the food is worth it despite the restaurants shortcomings! If you can get a reservation, I do recommend giving their prime rib a try."

H Dallas

"Short summary:
The food was amazing but I don’t know if it is worth the wait and the effort required to get a reservation.

Reservation & Service:
I had to call a couple of times months ahead before I finally got a table for 9:30. We probably got seated closer to around 10:00 and it took another hour for us to finally get to the prime rib. The restaurant was very packed so I don’t blame the waitstaff for being slow, but it didn’t feel good having to wait so long for the steak. Our waiter was very nice though and he did a great job with the presentation of each of our dishes.

Food:
I got the king Henry VIII cut and it came with bread, a seasonal salad which they toss in front of you, choice of loaded or mashed potatoes, creamy spinach, and Yorkshire pudding. It was a VERY BIG MEAL, totally worth the $80. The meat was tender and juicy, the sides were all delicious, but we simply could not finish everything."

Yes, you can bring your own bottle for a reasonable service charge, which can enhance your dining experience.

While not strictly enforced, many guests dress up slightly as part of the traditional dining experience.

It's very difficult. Arrive early or be prepared for a potentially long wait, especially if dining at the bar.

Best Food in SF: Most Essential Places to Eat & Food to Try

Russian HillSay what you will about San Francisco’s commitment to vegetable-forward dishes, seasonally changing menus, and locally sourced whatnot—one of the city's best and most beloved restaurants has a never-changing menu and centers around massive sides of beef. Welcome to the House of Prime Rib, a temple to tradition, where the only choices you have to make are the cut and temperature of meat you’d like, if you want your potatoes mashed, baked, or loaded, whether you’d prefer creamed spinach or corn (the answer is, of course, spinach), and just how dirty you want that Martini. The food is delicious, but it’s the experience that makes HOPR especially outstanding, centered around the zeppelins of prime rib wheeled around the room and lovingly carved by chefs in towering toques. How to book: Make reservations via OpenTable.

Over half a century after opening, this palace of beef is still one of the most fun places to have a meal in SF, full stop. Salads are spun and dressed from as high as the staff can reach, perfectly pink slices of prime rib are carved out of a roving silver cart, and the maze of dining rooms is constantly humming from the crackling fireplace, clinks from cocktail shakers, and birthday groups getting progressively tipsier. If you live in SF, coming here at least once in your life is required.
