Reviews Summary

Foreign Cinema offers a unique and memorable dining experience, blending Californian-Mediterranean cuisine with cinematic ambiance. Diners rave about the magical outdoor patio, the quality of the food, and the excellent service, making it a popular spot for dates and special occasions. While some find the prices high for the portion sizes, the overall experience is consistently praised as worth the cost.

"This was my second visit to Foreign Cinema.
It’s a fun and beautiful spot with a great atmosphere and good food. We didn’t stay long enough to catch the movie this time—maybe next time!

On our first visit, we had lunch indoors. The space was open and the seating was very comfortable. This time, we sat outside for dinner, and the patio was just as pleasant and inviting.

The food was slightly on the pricey side, especially considering the portion sizes and relatively simple preparation. That said, the service was excellent and the ambiance truly makes the experience special, which helps justify the cost.

I’d definitely recommend it and plan to return."

Anderson Angkeyile (Flying Sailor)

"This was my first real dining experience in San Francisco and this was nothing short of top notch. The bacon was crispy, sweet and delicious. The acme bread was crispy on the outside but so soft and tangy on the inside. The cinnamon scroll was on another level. The oysters were so tasty and fresh. The wagyu bavette was phenomenal 👌
Gave me all i needed to power through a day around the mission district."

josh Folghera

"Went for brunch and sat in the beautiful outdoor courtyard. We started with the warm bread and oysters, both excellent fresh, flavorful, and a great way to kick things off. My main was the scramble, which tasted great but had a presentation that felt a bit messy compared to the rest of the experience.

The only real downside was my table placement I was seated directly next to an outdoor speaker that was playing music the entire time. It was only about 6–8 inches from my ear, and felt uncomfortably loud for a leisurely brunch. Not sure why a speaker would be positioned right next to a guest’s seat, but it definitely took away from the otherwise relaxed atmosphere.

Overall, good food, charming space, and I’d happily return hopefully just with a different seat next time."

Essential Women-Led Restaurants in San Francisco: 11 Places to Visit Now

The MissionForeign Cinema is an iconic SF restaurant perhaps best known for its charming open-air patio with twinkle lights and movies playing on the wall, but it wouldn’t have survived for 20+ years if the food weren’t also ambitious, a little playful, and consistently delicious. Chefs and co-owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark met working at a restaurant near the Civic Center and then went on to work at Zuni, first as line cooks and then co-chefs de cuisine, eventually taking over to save Foreign Cinema which was floundering at the height of the first dotcom bust, and we are all happier San Franciscans because of it. Especially after a few cocktails at brunch. How to order: Foreign Cinema is seating people at the restaurant and is also offering brunch and dinner to-go.

At night, the heated outdoor patio, twinkle lights, and movie playing on the big white wall in the back makes Foreign Cinema feel like a romantic drive-in theater. During the day, sunlight floods the Mission patio and makes it a bright, breezy place to have croque madames big enough for four, crispy potatoes you’ll be talking about for weeks, and homemade Pop Tarts that rival store-bought. Movies won’t be playing on the wall, but you won't mind—the sunshine, the french toast, and Bloody Marys make Foreign Cinema a brunch spot to keep in your back pocket for cozy dates, or, really, any occasion.

15 Best San Francisco Restaurants For Outdoor Dining

It is impossible to write an article listing the best outdoor dining destinations in San Francisco without mentioning everyone's favorite brunch and dinner date place: Foreign Cinema. Everything about this venue's outdoor eating setup is purposeful and adds an essential element to the experience, especially at night when servers break out the mood lighting with candles and the strings of light overhead. A generous dusting of heaters to keep everyone cozy, and, of course, the pièce de résistance of any dinner at Foreign Cinema is an overhead projector playing a classic cinematic masterpiece for diners to enjoy as the evening's entertainment.
