Reviews Summary
Diners rave about The Crack Shack's fun atmosphere and delicious, creative takes on fried chicken and sandwiches. The outdoor seating and lively vibe make it a great spot for both families and adults, though some find the food quality to be inconsistent. Parking can also be a challenge in the popular Little Italy area.
"Really great food. Amazing. Loved it. Sandwiches are on the large side..no fries needed, but shared an order. Nuggets are about the size of a small tender. Cookies are huge. Seating is outdoor it was a beautiful day."
Brandi Sealy
"Nice restaurant in a very nice area. It’s a huge outdoor restaurant so there is plenty of seating. Staff were very nice. Most memorable was Jon and Louie. They went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. The food was good but the salad I had fell a little short of something. The fries are so fresh and delicious and The cookies are DELICIOUS and so are the milkshakes. Parking is a bit hard to find and it’s metered so be mindful."
missashley
"The food was honestly really really mid. The chicken seems like a decent quality, but it honestly had no taste. It needed a lot more seasoning and taste and maybe breading? The coleslaw did not taste like coleslaw, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t coleslaw. The biscuits were good, but really dry. The fries were good. Atmosphere was also really nice, we were there in the late late evening, so it was nice and not crowded. Parking really sucked"

Best Fried Chicken Restaurants in San Diego, CA
More upscale than most chicken joints in atmosphere, execution, and (correspondingly) price, Richard Blais’ fine-casual, family- and dog-friendly venue uses humanely raised, free-range Jidori poultry and eggs, as well as top-quality produce sourced from small local farms. Savory to the bone and boasting an incredibly crunchy crust that stays on bite after bite, this chicken doesn’t need to be embellished, but go ahead and dip it into one or more of the six sauces available, ranging from Argentine chimichurri and kimchee barbecue to the house specialty "cracksup." Sandwich lovers will crave the cool, creamy lime mayo, shredded napa cabbage, and pickled Fresno chilies on the Coop DeVille, and the sweet umami maple miso butter, bacon, Cheddar, and fried egg-topped Senor Croque. Fried chicken aficionados, meanwhile, go for the Chicken Oysters: delectable thumbnail-sized pieces of back meat, brined in pickle juice and lightly fried, ready for a drizzle of lemon juice and spicy mustard seed tartar sauce.
The Best Restaurants in San Diego
An almost entirely outdoor spot, the Crack Shack features a walk-up window, bocce ball court, and cocktail bar. For something more traditional, head next door to Blais’s second concept, Juniper & Ivy, where you can enjoy an ever-changing menu of seasonal shared plates. From time to time, the restaurant hosts a Farm Dinner centered on a special ingredient like lamb from a local purveyor, making for one of the best splurge meals in the city.

The team from Juniper & Ivy conceptualized and opened The Crack Shack in a former mechanic shop in Little Italy. The all-day menu is an homage to chicken and eggs, and the team aspires to push back against what it has deemed the disrespect of the two ingredients, from farm to table. Fried chicken is the way to go.

Their slogan is 100% correct: “We are not your average restaurant – and this is not your average chicken.” The chicken is super crispy on the outside, and the inside is juicy and full of flavor. It’s clear that they use high-quality ingredients and the food is consistently good. My favorites are the Coop Deville (fried Jidori chicken breast, pickled fresno chilies, pickles, lime mayo, napa cabbage, brioche) and Firebird (fried Jidori thigh, cool ranch, crispy onions, pickles, potato roll).

The fried chicken restaurant from celebrity chef Richard Blais has never offered indoor dining, so they were always well-equipped for this moment.
