Reviews Summary

Ironside Fish & Oyster is celebrated for its exceptionally fresh seafood, particularly its extensive oyster selection and highly-praised lobster roll. The unique, nautical-themed ambiance adds to the overall dining experience. While most guests rave about the food and atmosphere, some note that the lobster roll can be bread-forward, and it's advisable to make reservations due to its popularity.

"We went out to celebrate my friend's birthday, and let me tell you, we had a fantastic time! The food was absolutely delicious and bursting with flavor. Our servers, Gina and Alex, were super friendly and really made us feel welcome. And oh my goodness, the freshly baked bread 🍞🍞🍞 was to die for! I had to show some self-control not to fill up on that before the main course. I ordered the Blue crab 🦀🦀 bucatini pasta 🍝🍝🍝, and it was just amazing—so fresh and satisfying! My friend was really impressed with their lobster roll too. We all left feeling really happy and full. What a great night!"

Teena Malicsi

"Came here for happy hour and got the dollar oysters! I personally liked the oysters but my friend didn’t. The oysters were a bit more salty than we liked, but after the lime juice it was pretty good. We also got the Mai tai cocktails ($3 off during happy hour). They came in these really cute cocktail mugs! We didn’t stay long enough for dinner, so not sure how their other foods taste. We were very fortunate to be seated without a reservation. We tried making one day of but everything was booked. Definitely a positive experience!"

Cindy Li

"Loved my experience. The menu changes every day, sometimes twice a day and they print it out with local catch and dishes of day.. I sat at the side bar, there’s seating at back where you can watch the chefs create. I had the Russian River Blind Pig beer ipa $10 loved it and tasted my friends Bucha Hard Kombucha yum! Mango /dragon fruit 6% $8.. Later I had the Albariño white wine Spain $15 Great as well! (Says on the menu they have happy hour Monday to Friday 3 to 5 PM) but we were there after 6 PM.
For our meals that we both split we chose the Mussels Verde $24 and Blue Crab Bucatini Pasta $38. I really really loved that, the mussels were good too. We got the Ironsides Bread (cute loaf soft a little sweet hot out of oven with whipped butter- $7 good) I’ll put in pic of menu up close so you can see ingredients.
It was my birthday and they brought me a candle lit big cookie topped with ice cream and whipped cream on side, it was a perfect sweet finish. Service really great, nice people everywhere. The stools were a bit hard and we stayed pretty long so my butt got a bit sore… ha.
Oh one thing I saw next to me was a special buffet of a cocktail… the guy to my left ordered. It was incredible with 4 sauces and 2 drinks.. I learned they have another thick book cocktail menu and it was from that he ordered: FANTASTIC. I wish I remembered the name [see below] BUT CHECK OUT THAT BOOK! I certainly will!! I’ve been to Ironsides about 5 times, I always have loved it.
“The rising tide lifts all boats”. On the front entrance wall. Great oysters too!

Added after: I called Ironside to find out what that incredible drink oyster combo thing was and it’s called a FOGHORN. It’s a beer, a shot of bourbon and then you can order oyster/ shrimp cocktail or ceviche and it comes with all the standard things they give you for oysters, which is horseradish , a comeback sauce, which is a tomato aïoli and a Granita, which is like a frozen Purée that’s cool and refreshing and their current one is jalapeño so it’s like an icy slushy! So it’s pretty spectacular!! She said you could order any drinks you want. Greatest idea!!!
Thank you Ironsides!!"

The Best Restaurants in San Diego

Like a nautical version of the yellow brick road, illuminated anchors embedded in the floors of Ironside Fish & Oyster lead you to the Emerald City of raw bars, where the bounteous platters come in Big, Bigger, Biggest, and Holy Sh*t. This last assortment might include, say, 24 oysters, 14 shrimp, 14 mussels, two pounds of lobster, two ounces of sustainable royal white sturgeon caviar, a portion of rockfish ceviche, and some kanpachi crudo for good measure (the mix changes daily according to what’s fresh). Not that lovers of cooked seafood will go hungry at chef Jason McLeod’s Little Italy hot spot, where the catch of the day is a perennial favorite.

12 Best Places for Seafood in San Diego

San Diego only has a few chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, and Ironside claims one of them: Jason McLeod, who earned two top marks while working at Chicago's Ria. At Ironside, he presides over the raw bar and seafood menu, which features a shining selection of Kusshi oysters and a gluttonous lobster roll dressed in brown butter mayo—local fisherman catch most of the food and get their own shout-outs on every page. Sample a bit of everything with the $420 "Holy Shit" platter made up of caviar, crudo, ceviche, and a mountain of oysters, mussels and lobster (with a name like that, you know it doesn't disappoint).

Best Restaurants in San Diego's Little Italy to Eat at Right Now

This maritime-themed restaurant pays tribute to the history of Little Italy—where Italian and Portuguese immigrants once settled to earn a living from the city’s thriving tuna industry. Naturally, seafood takes center stage, so you’ll find a menu of lobster rolls, crab cakes, and clam chowder, in addition to locally caught fish served with either green garlic beurre blanc or almond romesco sauce. Get a seafood tower for a little taste of everything from the raw bar—which includes a robust oyster program that’s as well-curated as the restaurant’s wine selection.
