@Herb & Wood changed the city’s dining culture when chef Brian Malarkey and Chris Puffer opened it in Little Italy 10 years ago. In restaurant culture, 10 years is 100 years. A feat. But how do you stay relevant in the new-new-new social-media restaurant craze? You hire a “kid” like Aidan Owens, who’s one of the fastest-rising young chefs we’ve seen in the city in a long time. He started cooking a...

Reviews Summary

Herb & Wood offers an upscale dining experience with attentive service and a visually stunning ambiance. Guests rave about the unique wood-fired dishes, creative cocktails, and exceptional value happy hour. However, some diners have noted issues with inconsistent food temperature, minor service oversights, and the presence of surcharges.

"An truly 5 star experience. The food was incredible. Very unique and tasteful interpretations of many cultural dishes. The Australian wagyu was tasty, melted in your mouth. The pizza was unique and phenomenal. To many dishes to even list. It was exquisite to say the least."

Jude Martinez

"Basic food imho. Small menu with secret items. They use a lot of lemon zest for that flavor profile but it’s a little too much especially when used on multiple items. Service was outstanding, but the food took 40 minutes to get to the table and they served others first and it wasn’t even busy. I couldn’t enjoy my food because it took forever and I was full by the time it arrived. I noted this out to two waiters and they brushed it off with laughter. And the pasta is basic. Don’t order that. The pizza is good just a little soggy in the middle. The potatoes were nice and crunchy but again with that lemon zest. The oysters were not cleaned properly and had debris and too much horseradish. The agua was too tarty and also sweet - not refreshing."

Alvaro Chavez

"We had an absolutely splendid time at Herb & Wood! Everyone working here is so delightful! The babaganoush is a MUST TRY and the pita they serve with it is divine! You can tell it’s truly made with love. Don’t sleep on the broccoli either. Very flavorful with a nice spice.

The happy hour is steal! Maybe one of the best secrets in Little Italy! Many delicious wines by the glass for less than $9 and real French champagne for $13! You can get a “happy meal” for $20 with a drink, fries, oysters, and burger!

Can’t wait to return."

Best Restaurants in San Diego's Little Italy to Eat at Right Now

Rustic, wood-fired dishes from Top Chef finalist Brian Malarkey—the man behind several of SD’s standout eateries—are the main draw at Herb & Wood. His California ethos of focusing on fresh, local, seasonal ingredients prepared with simple yet eclectic flavors means you’ll find bigeye tuna encrusted in Ethiopian berbere, venison rubbed with Moroccan coffee, and branzino accompanied by a Castelvetrano olive tapenade. Malarkey rounds out the menu with plenty of starters (the Roasted Oysters and Bone Marrow is a must), vegetable sides (like the Seven Spiced Cauliflower or Roasted Baby Carrots with cashew sesame dukkah), and house-made pastas and pizzas that you can smell the minute you step into the space.

The Best Restaurants in San Diego

At Little Italy’s Herb & Wood, Chef Brian Malarkey’s wood-fired dishes include roasted parsnips with pickled raisins, parsley-shallot verde, and molten Marin County brie; roasted beets with sherry, walnut pesto, jamón Ibérico, and burrata; and grilled flat bread with whipped eggplant, za’atar, onions, and pine nuts. But the Mediterranean- and California-inspired menu isn’t the only big draw here: The industrial-boudoir aesthetic is equally inviting, with tufted sofas, soft lighting, and feathery fronds under the soaring ceilings of this onetime warehouse. A charmingly tattered edition of Emily Post’s Etiquette book has pride of place on the hostess stand.
