Reviews Summary

Takashi is widely praised for its exceptional sushi and sashimi, with a vibrant atmosphere and creative dishes that impress. While the food and service are consistently lauded, some diners find the prices steep and the wait times long due to its immense popularity. Despite the potential wait and cost, many agree it's a must-visit for serious sushi enthusiasts. [^R2, ^R3, ^M8]

"Let me start with Aaron, Tony, and Zach, made this a wonderful dining experience. Personable and attentive, with knowledge and a passion for their work. All our food was delicious. Asian cesear, tempura vegetables sushi of all types and even the mango mousse to finish it off. I recommend sitting at the bar as it provides a very different experience. Limited seating for such a popular place leads to lines and waits so arrive early, stand in the line and give this place a shot."

Looking To Get Lost

"If you’re serious about sushi in SLC, Takashi is the spot—but get there before they open if you want to make the first seating. It fills up fast for a reason.

We started with the pear salad, which had great flavor and texture. The pickled pear had a subtle, addictive tang I couldn’t quite place, and the mix of greens, seeds, and creamy cheese hit all the right notes.

Calamari came out as a massive portion. The dipping sauce carried the dish—calamari was decent, not super flavorful on its own but fried well and not greasy.

Fried oysters were visually stunning, served in-shell. Crunchy and clean, though I’ve had better. Still solid.

Edamame dumplings were the best appetizer by far. Super rich broth, great texture, and savory flavor in every bite—don’t skip these.

The steak with vegetable tempura was beautifully cooked and plated. Steak was juicy and flavorful, and the tempura (especially the portobello) was crisp and not overly oily.

Now the sushi—fresh across the board. Favorites:
• Squid, bonito, mirugai, masaba were the standouts.
• Uni was sweet and creamy.
• Also enjoyed: chutoro, iwashi, razor clam, amaebi—all fresh and handled well.

Our server was fantastic—welcoming, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. The sake recommendation she gave us paired really well with the nigiri. Only suggestion: it would be great if the larger bottles of sake came with a chilled bucket to keep it cool through the meal.

Top-tier experience overall. Can’t wait to go back."

"I'd give 6 stars for service if I could. We got to sit at the sushi bar and enjoyed the delightful experience of discussing our meal with the chefs. They provided thoughtful insights about the menu and ingredients. This was a lovely meal. Note that you will have to show up early or expect to wait outside for a while. It's worth it!"

Restaurants in Salt Lake City

You'll often see chef-owner Takashi Gibo behind the sushi bar at this hip and lively Japanese restaurant across from the Gallivan Center. Takashi is known for sublime, melt-in-your mouth sushi as well as a slew of izakaya-style treats, like miso-grilled eggplant, baked marinated sablefish, and shiitake lamb shank in Japanese yellow curry. The list of specialty sushi rolls is long and never lacks for inspiration—try the one topped with escolar, sliced strawberry, spicy sauce, and fresh chilies, with toasted almonds and eel sauce on the outside.

Best Restaurants in Salt Lake City, Utah: Coolest Places to Eat

When Chef/Owner Takashi Gibo opened his namesake restaurant, he seriously raised the stakes for Japanese cuisine in Utah. A gentle and kind perfectionist, Gibo is known for serving up the freshest and most innovative sushi, sashimi, and nigiri around, but be on the lookout for his often-overlooked cooked dishes as well, like shiitake lamb shank and sensational Saikyo miso sablefish. For a special treat, try the ankimo (monkfish liver) hand roll; it tastes like foie gras, without the moral dilemma of actual foie gras.

Food Bloggers' Guide of Where to Eat in Salt Lake City, UT

SLC has it’s fair share of sushi restaurants, but while the rest of the city is downtown waiting in line at the ever popular Takashi, we gladly head to our neighborhood sushi and ramen bar and hope the rest of the city dwellers will stay far away. Sitting on the Salt Lake foothills in the Olympus Hills Marketplace, Kobe Sushi has become known for it’s killer ramen. Tonkatsu, Mabo and Miso are our ramen mainstays but Kimchi ramen is popular, too.

I want to do a full sushi post another time, but Takashi is worth noting because many people ask about my favorite sushi in Utah. If you love sushi–the real sushi that isn’t dripping in mayo sauces or deep fried (lol not that there’s anything wrong with that!),– this is the place to go for a special night out. It’s always fun to grab sushi here and head to one of the many lounges or bars nearby after dinner.
