Red Iguana 2 brings the same legendary Mexican food that made the original famous, but with way more space to enjoy it. You'll find roomier dining areas, a 13-seat counter, heated patio, and an adults-only bar area. The real showstopper here is Xochitonal - a massive 30-foot iguana sculpture made from over 120,000 hand-sculpted tiles by Utah artist Stephen Kesler. This incredible piece honors the ...

We love the mole, definitely one of the best we’ve had. However, It isn’t earth shattering good compared to the others Mexican restaurants in the area.

Reviews Summary

Red Iguana is celebrated for its exceptional and authentic Mexican cuisine, particularly its diverse and flavorful house-made moles and signature dishes. Diners consistently praise the quick, friendly service and lively atmosphere. While the food is a major draw, some acknowledge the potentially sketchy neighborhood and the long wait times as drawbacks.

"Really the best Mexican food I've had.

It's a shabby looking place, the neighborhood is meh, you'll wait in line to get in (20 min on a Thursday evening at 5pm). But it's good.

The chips are light and the smooth, smoky and flavorful salsa is amazing. Don't fill up on them even though you want to.

Then we had the Mango Enchiladas and the Traditional Enchiladas. You'll get two corn wrapped enchiladas with whatever meat you want and covered in truly great sauce. That's their real mastery, the moles and sauces. The mango was slightly sweet, smoky, and deep. The traditional was easily the best traditional enchilada I've had.

Staff were really quick and friendly, they're used to moving people through smoothly. The food came quickly, nice and hot and fresh, and the prices were really reasonable.

The beans and rice that they come with are fine, they're kind of a Mexican food staple, but the enchiladas are the stars. Focus on those."

Michelle Mitton

"I highly recommend you request a mole sampler! You can then find your favorite mole. The tacos as the main course were a favorite, our waiter also recommended them and thought they were a great choice. He was right. The dessert was fairly priced and definitely large enough to split. The decorations all matched the aesthetic they were going for. The restaurant is a little small and was already packed by 6pm for dinner on a Tuesday night. The area the restaurant is around I would describe as sketchy, and leaning towards future gentrification. I highly recommend coming here for food, you will love the flavors they provide and will leave with a fully belly."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Red Iguana – Best Mexican Food in Salt Lake City

Red Iguana is hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake City. After moving from Southern California three years ago, we’ve been searching for authentic Mexican food — and this place absolutely delivered.

I ordered the enchiladas, and my wife had the flautas along with a peach margarita. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The sauces were incredible, especially the mole — you can tell they specialize in rich, traditional flavors. The peach margarita was one of the best we’ve ever had.

The atmosphere is fun, lively, and full of character. Even though we had a 30-minute wait, it was well worth it. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the whole dining experience even better.

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food in Salt Lake City, don’t miss Red Iguana. Great food, great service, and a true local favorite. We can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu."

Restaurants in Salt Lake City

Visitors are sometimes taken aback to find stunningly authentic, richly flavorful house-made moles, chile verde, carnitas, and other self-described "killer Mexican" dishes in Salt Lake City, and especially in a rambling old yellow-brick building on the other side of I–15 from Downtown. But the lines out the door attest to the longstanding adoration of the Red Iguana, which in addition to doling out great food also serves first-rate premium margaritas, good Mexican beers, and delicious and free salsa and chips. If the crowds have you feeling blue, try the satellite outpost, Red Iguana 2, which is just two blocks away and has many more tables.

So when he told me about Red Iguana, a casual Mexican place that’s “quite possibly the most famous restaurant in the state,” I went directly from the airport. He wasn’t wrong: There was a crush of people standing on North Temple under a weathered red sign. A host at a podium outside was ruthlessly informing a party of 15 that because their whole party wasn’t present, they could not be seated and no, their table wouldn’t be held.
