A king who washed feet, ate with the poor, heard court cases under an oak, and built a jewel-box chapel to honor the Crown of Thorns—meet Saint Louis IX 👑✨ “The first thing I advise is that you fix your whole heart upon God…” He fought corruption, protected the weak, ransomed captives, and signed peace over conquest. This is Catholic Voices and Prayers — bringing saints’ stories to life! Today is August 25th. St. Louis IX, King of France, lived as a model of justice, humility, and charity. A devoted husband, father, and ruler, he cared for the poor and governed his kingdom in light of the Gospel. St. Louis IX, pray for us!

Reviews Summary

Diners rave about The Benevolent King's innovative Japanese-inspired menu and artfully crafted cocktails, praising the exceptional service and romantic, trendy ambiance. While some note minor service speed variations, the overall consensus is a delightful and memorable dining experience with creative flavors and a sophisticated atmosphere.

"Edit- our second visit was even better than the first. If you love sushi, make a reservation here ASAP! The Tempura Fried Twinkie is absolute gas.

Our first meal at the reinvented Benevolent King proved to be an absolute delight. We had outstanding service and delicious sushi. This is a unique concept compared to other sushi restaurants but B.K. really knocks it out of the park. Attention to detail is not spared and we found each bite packed with flavor. Would recommend the Pacific Oysters and King Roll. We have plans to return soon and cannot wait to try a few more dishes."

"The food at Benevolent King is excellent. They are portioned to be small plates, but I felt that they were pretty generous. We loved everything except for the poached apples - they were fine, just not to our taste.

We tried a couple of the wines by the glass and appreciated the dry and not-to-sweet selection.

Our server was also very hospitable and timed her checks on us, very well, always coming as well finished a plate and ready with what was next.

It was a great place to eat on a cool, fall evening."

"We had diner here tonight and it was delicious. They have a great selection of small plates and cocktails. We tried the lamb meatballs and tuna tartar. Both were rich and delicious. Pictured is the Salatim. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but all the dipping sauces were amazing. The cocktails were good. The waiter suggested a black Manhattan and I found it to be a little nuttier than expected but not in a bad way. I would get it again. Overall, good experience and would recommend."

The 20 Most Beautiful Restaurants in St. Louis

If the sunlight from the windows facing South Grand catches one of the tables at Sheesh Restaurant just right, you are likely to be blinded. Fashioned from ornate copper from base to top, the round, low-profile stunners are the first thing you notice. Then you notice the chairs, squat, angular and decked with red and black Turkish fabrics. The same fabric hangs from the walls, as do some colorful, Turkish-inspired paintings and an abstract black and white print of the Bosphorus. And the copper is not limited to the tables. Décor, platters, pitchers, serving dishes — even the flatware, cups and plates given to every diner are made from the stuff. If King Midas' powers worked in copper rather than gold, you'd swear he'd touched just about every corner of this showpiece of a restaurant.

Ian Froeb's STL 100: Our critic's 2022 guide to the best restaurants in St. Louis

Ben Poremba unveiled the Benevolent King in 2018 with a doubly enticing pitch. The Maplewood restaurant would draw inspiration from the cuisine of his mother’s native Morocco, while Poremba himself — the acclaimed chef-restaurateur of Elaia, Olio and Nixta who in recent years had been more restaurateur than chef — would lead the kitchen. The Benevolent King’s food proved appealing enough, and Poremba’s eye for kitchen talent keen enough, that the restaurant thrived as he stepped back to attend to his other projects as well.

With a menu filled with offerings like Tokyo Nachos (spicy tuna and tempura shiso leaves), it's no wonder the cocktails at TBK are just as imaginative. Take the Shizukesa, or "tranquility" cocktail, for example: It's made with Suntory Roku gin, Giffard Crème de Cacao, Giffard Blue Curaçao, vanilla-kumquat syrup, lime, orange bitters and caper brine.
