Brunch is thought to be an American established custom, but it’s the perfect way to present the French influence at Gerard Craft’s Brasserie by Niche; you should expect to find on the menu quiche, beignets and eggs en cocotte. Meanwhile, the dinner menu offers very accurate interpretations of bistro-style steak frites, onion soup or croque madame. The menu tries to avoid French terms unless there’s no English translation (for example, the dish called cassoulet with duck confit, tomato, sausage and white beans) or when the French meal name simply sounds better (tender, wild Burgundy escargots).

The veteran of Gerard Craft’s restaurant group, Brasserie by Niche garnered renewed attention in February when executive chef Evy Swoboda and longtime pastry chef Elise Mensing were named James Beard Award semifinalists for “Best Chef: Midwest” and “Outstanding Pastry Chef” nationwide, respectively. But if you have an ache for Iberian cuisine—and a hankering to sup in surroundings that are fantastical and opulent, with the authentic taste of Spain—then head to this hot spot, tucked into the new 21c Museum Hotel, one of the city’s most astonishingly chic places to stay. Yawning windows illuminate a bright bar; the main room is romantically dark. A small menu of full courses is fine; the selection of tapas and bocaditos, however, is exquisite.

Air-light gougeres and rich cassoulet are always a good idea at Central West End institution Brasserie, which also includes arguably the best patio for people watching. Your eyes, belly, and soul will forever be delighted after dining at Billie-Jean. An all-black interior, superb art, and custom staff jumpsuits set this place apart as it serves up sumptuous fare with Pan-Asian influence.

Order a French dish while dining al fresco at Brasserie and close your eyes; you might be able to imagine you're on the streets of Paris. Another French favorite to make the list, Brasserie by Niche has a charming outdoor patio that is often bustling with guests and foodies. You can enjoy classic French dishes for dinner and brunch, including croque madame, roasted chicken and French onion soup, made with croutons, comté cheese and chives.

This one is my husband’s favorite date night and special occasion restaurants. If you aren’t feeling like an upscale meal, you can opt for their wonderful weekend brunch instead. Gerard Craft is practically a household name in St. Louis food, and this is one of my favorite restaurants in his portfolio.

Brasserie by Niche is the quintessential French spot, so it’s no wonder that the Central West End restaurant nails the quintessential French side dish: pomme frites. Thin, crispy, and served with a side of classic aioli, they're delicious alongside a steak but just as good on their own.

As far as the restaurants are concerned, Brasserie by Niche is a French restaurant, perfect for a fancy night out, whereas The Scottish Arms is a more relaxed pub with great drinks. There are plenty more great places to eat here, though, so take a stroll and see what you like.
