Reviews Summary

The Kitchen Restaurant offers a highly acclaimed and unique dining experience, often described as a "show" or "party." Guests rave about the exceptional, top-tier food, personalized service, and the interactive open-kitchen format. While the experience is pricey, most find it well worth the cost for special occasions. However, some have encountered issues with service reliability, particularly regarding re-orders, and one review noted a hygiene concern.

"Not just dinner. Its a Dining experience. Very unique format. One group is brought in for a fixed menu and stay all night. At a table or counter, experience the chefs preparation. Food is amazing. Top tier prep and ingredients. Best dining experience I've had in my life. It is very classy, but the chef makes it fun also and brings a very positive energy to he room. The service staff were on point. The ratio of staff to patron was plentiful. Yes it is pricey, but it's worth it. In addition, you will not leave hungry. Plenty of appetizers and you can revisit them. You can also ask for additional courses. There were 2 dishes in the first act, intermission was an oyster plate, 2 courses in the 2nd act , and dessert."

Charlie H

"I have to say I been to 40 countries and been to alot of upscale restaurants but this place was different. Staff was amazing food was on another level and the cocktails was from another planet. My wife did the wine 🍷 pairing and I did the cocktail 🍸 pairing. I talked to the executive chef 👨‍🍳 that man is comical and a mad scientist when it comes to deliciousness. He stood on business when he said you will not leave out of here feeling like you need to go see an In and out 🍔 . I can see what the buzz was all about and understand how one get flash backs from college days staying up picking the course you want becuase its the same when attempting to book a date. 10 out 10 I recommend."

Will Woods

"That Michelin star is entirely justified! And my God, you leave absolutely stuffed. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. Food and drink was phenomenal. You WILL feel in the way walking through the kitchen but they invite you in! Take advantage of the rare opportunity behind the curtain. With cocktail pairings and automatic gratuity to ensure fair staff pay it comes to about $400 per person. For a rare dinner or special event, very worth the experience.

As an aside, if you're someone who gets a bit overstimulated by long stretches of loud noise, don't expect a quiet experience. It's a fun time absolutely and it's not obscenely loud but if you're misophonic or have sound sensitivities, maybe consider earplugs."

The Best Restaurants For Fine Dining In Sacramento, California

Sitting around an open kitchen, eating a five-course, prix fixe meal from a monthly menu that is paired with one of two perfectly curated wine flights, partaking in some sushi during an intermission, watching the chef act as much as compere as cook. This is dining with a difference. There is only one sitting a night here, which fosters intimacy and a communal atmosphere not just between the guests and the staff, but among the guests themselves.

Restaurants in Sacramento and the Gold Country

The chefs and front-of-house staff at this perennial favorite with a prix-fixe menu pull out all the stops to deliver a multisensory gustatory experience. The flamboyant presentation of courses as a series of "Acts"—not to mention the dramatically lit, flower-bestrewn dining room's intentionally buoyant atmosphere—might distract from the modern American cuisine were it not so well conceived and prepared with such panache and precision.

Where to Eat in Sacramento

For more than 20 years, the Selland Family has been promoting the local food movement, and nowhere is that better demonstrated than at The Kitchen. Executive chef Kelly McCown continues the culinary legacy of Randall Selland, with five-course seasonal menus including such dishes as braised Montana beef cheeks with black truffle agnolotti and Yunnan black tea shortbread. With only one seating a night, it’s not easy to score a spot, but once you do, you’re in for the kind of exceptional dining experience that has made The Kitchen the first Sacramento restaurant to earn a Michelin star.

Sacramento’s toughest reservation and highest prix-fixe bill (one person costs $165, plus tax and 22 percent gratuity) is, as it’s often said, an experience. The lone dinner service each night spans roughly 3 1/2 hours as chef/emcee Kelly McCown pivots between organizing his staff and cracking jokes, often at select customers’ expense. Pan-roasted scallops with yellow foot chanterelles, wild rice congee, charred leeks and Japanese artichokes on a recent menu were worth exercising The Kitchen’s famous rule that seconds of any course can be had upon request.

The five-course prix-fixe menu changes regularly, but features items such California black cod with cara cara oranges and sea scallops with yellow food chanterelles.

There is no other restaurant in Sacramento—and the country, for that matter—like the Kitchen. Totally unique in its format, dining at this 25-year-old fixture feels like a party in a theater. Over five courses and four hours, chefs put on a show in the elegant dining room, while an epic intermission lets you wander through the kitchen—backstage, essentially—to chat with cooks and sample more bites.
