What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Binchoyaki is celebrated for its delicious and creative Japanese izakaya fare, particularly its high-temperature grilled skewers and inventive small plates. While many praise the unique flavors and attentive service, some diners find the ordering system cumbersome and the pricing high for the portion sizes. There are also occasional comments about dishes being too salty or the overall dining experience not meeting expectations.
"I only leave reviews when things are really good or really bad! This place was fire. It was all good but make sure you absolutely get pork belly skewers, krispy rice, mochi bacon, and the sweet potato, all those were 10/10. The chicken thigh skewers and curry fries are also super good!! Their sushi is some of the best I’ve ever had, but they only serve at lunch, so keep that in mind. Pictured is Yukon potato’s(sweet potatoes better) and pork belly and then the krispy rice! We sat at the counter and it was super fun to watch them cook. I’m a tough critic and this place exceeded all expectations."

"This is my 2nd time here and we tried some new things as well as stuff we have had before. The menu is expansive with a lot of options so we had some skewers as well as some main dishes all of which we shared. Some of the skewers are a little pricey for how much food you get and our server wasn't the clearest explaining it but everything we ordered was tasty. We really enjoyed the shishito peppers, hamachi collar and the chicken wings. Hands down our favorite was the beef curry cheese fries! Big chunks of beef, lots of sauce, cheesy and simply delicious! I'd go back just for this dish alone. The Yakinigiri was also delicious as well! Enjoyed our meal and definitely would go back again the next time I'm im town!"

"Nice little place, but the food was a little too salty for the wife and I. I forgot to take pictures of the other food items we got.
Their Onibi West Coast Double IPA was really good. We got mostly Yakitori Skewers, the knee cartilage, NY Strip Loin, and kinoko miso soup were really good.
We also got the hamachi, which was salty, the pork belly grain mustard was okay, and the arabiki sausages were as ok.
I’m not sure what the pricing is for each skewer so I couldn’t say."

s best restaurants: Where to eat in 2021
Married couple Craig Takehara and Tokiko Sawada’s izakaya in Sacramento’s old Japantown is a favorite among local chefs, and with good reason. Binchoyaki scorches meats on imported charcoal grills that surge north of 1,000 degrees, turning off-cuts such as organic chicken tail or snappy arabiki sausage into blackened skewers swept simply with salt or a house tare sauce. Plan to lounge at a table or bar for a couple hours when visiting post-pandemic, don’t expect dishes to be delivered instantly and mask your surprise when piles of small plates add up to a large bill.
Best Dinner in Sacramento
Its Japanese barbecue, with most small-plate dishes cooked sumiyaki style—sumi (or bincho) is Japanese charcoal, and yaki means grill. Hot-hot binchotan charcoal lends a particular, and delicious, flavor to meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. Also on the menu: ramen, tempura and bento boxes, plenty of drinks, and everything is served izakaya-style: friendly, informal and welcoming.
Top Takeout
Why we love it: Because it serves pupu platter s for the 21 st century. As parents of small children, Craig Takehara and Toki Sawada know how challenging it is to have to put dinner on the table—stat. So the couple behind Binchoyaki came up with several “ mixed platters” that answer the age-old question “What’s for dinner tonight?
