"One of the best dining experiences we have had in Richmond! From the kind service, to the fun, chic atmosphere, and the decadent, mouth watering food…..we couldn’t have asked for a better birthday dinner! Do yourself a favor and order the fried green tomatoes, short ribs, and halibut. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. Every dish was exploding with flavor. Pretty sure you could order any of their dishes and be absolutely satisfied! Can’t wait to come back!"

"We always enjoy our meals at Shagbark. One of the best restaurants in Richmond. The service is great, and they offer an extended wine list along with a bar full of flavorful cocktails. The food is consistently delicious and very well prepared.
This time we ordered the salmon, shrimp pasta, beet salad, and squash blossoms — everything was excellent.
One suggestion: consider adding a beef dish. They have a great range of proteins, but a steak with the chef’s twist would be a fantastic addition.
Parking is easy, and the location is convenient with quick access to several highways and Richmond hotspots. Highly recommend."

"This is hands down my absolute favorite restaurant in RVA. My husband and I live basically across the street from this establishment, and go pretty frequently. We have never once had a bad meal here. The staff is absolutely wonderful and extremely attentive. We usually sit at the bar, but on occasion we have reserved a table. The dishes are inventive and fun, and the soups are my favorite. I would recommend coming here hands down!"

The 100 best restaurants in Richmond in 2025
Before opening Shagbark in 2016, Walter Bundy had run the kitchen at The Jefferson’s acclaimed Lemaire restaurant as executive chef for nearly 15 years. Shagbark depicts the vision of an expert who spent years contemplating a cohesive concept. The name recalls the native Virginia Shagbark tree, and large live-edge slabs split the dining room and bar, providing a foundation for the restaurant’s Southern yet modern vibe.
Richmond, Virginia’s Congenial Food and Drink Scene

Restaurant of the Year: Longoven
On price, Longoven’s small plates are in the same range as starters at Acacia, Brenner Pass, Lemaire, L’Opossum and Shagbark. Longoven doesn’t serve big dinner plates of meat-and-three main courses, but the chef’s tasting menu provides a full dinner. Longoven’s tasting menu, at $165 per person with paired wines, is far less than the $200 option at Perch.
