Reviews Summary

Restaurant Adarra offers a unique Basque-inspired dining experience with many reviewers praising the inventive seafood dishes and cozy atmosphere. While most guests find the food exceptional and the service attentive, a few have noted issues with inconsistent service timing and the overwhelming use of dill on some dishes. The new Oregon Hill location has drawn mixed reactions regarding its ambiance, with some finding it somber and noisy, while others appreciate its intimate charm.

"Tucked away in Richmond, Adarra delivers an unforgettable dining experience that blends warm hospitality with a menu designed to impress. From the moment we walked in, we were met with a welcoming atmosphere, setting the tone for an evening of outstanding food and service.

Our server, Lily, was exceptional, she was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the dishes, making our experience even more enjoyable.

We started with the three-cheese plate, which came with crackers and their house made blood orange marmalade and honey. All of which was delicious and an excellent way to start the night.

The octopus and potatoes were a standout, perfectly tender with a smoky char that balanced beautifully with the richness of the potatoes. My favorite dish of the evening.

The pork belly and beans brought deep, comforting flavors, with the pork belly’s crisp edges giving way to melt-in-your-mouth decadence.

The prawns and bisque were another highlight, plump, succulent prawns bathed in a velvety bisque that was pure indulgence.

To finish, the cheesecake was delicious, light yet luscious, with just the right touch of sweetness.

Beyond the incredible food, Adarra’s cozy ambiance and welcoming staff make it a must-visit. Whether you’re a Richmond local or just passing through, this restaurant is a culinary destination worth experiencing. We’ll definitely be back!"

"We got a reservation at their new location in Oregon Hill. The property is very beautiful. You might want to get there a little early to find parking because the parking lot is for deliveries. Only we wish there was a little bit more explanation of the menu it is shared plates. The serving staff was very professional. Some of our favorite dishes were the non-meat dishes, including the carrots and the beet salad without at least two of the dishes were a little bit too similar for our taste, but still had a very good taste. We should just go with several people so you can try more dishes."

"We went there for our anniversary and they were amazing. The food has to be one of the best in Richmond! I don’t think you could go wrong with anything on the menu! They even offered us a free dish for our celebration. We had a later reservation which worked out for the better because there were less people (and less noise). It’s a small space, so it can get a bit loud when it’s full. Highly recommend if you’re looking for some upscale food!"

With its Basque-inspired pintxos, a clever cocktail program and a Spanish-leaning natural and biodynamic wine list, at Restaurant Adarra, you might think you were sitting in a little Basque village instead of Richmond’s Jackson Ward neighborhood. Using the framework of true Basque cuisine with local Virginia ingredients, the menu is packed with small plates with big flavor like cured meats, marinated boquerones, roasted octopus, smoked mussels, shrimp al ajillo and lamb gnocchi.

Where To Eat In Richmond, Virginia, Right Now

While Richmond has many restaurants that celebrate international cuisines with a Southern twist, Adarra’s cozy dining room in Jackson Ward can truly make guests feel as if they are transported to Spain. Named after a mountain south of San Sebastian in the country’s Basque region, husband-and-wife team Randall and Lyne Doetzer delight Adarra’s diners with Pintxos Gildas (pickled peppers skewered with anchovies and green olives), Jamón Pata Negra (42-month aged Iberian ham), and Navajas al Natural (razor clams served in an irresistible smoked butter). The wine program focuses on natural and organic vineyards and the front-of-house team is always eager to share their favorite bottles with curious patrons.

The Perfect Weekend Travel Guide for Your First Visit to Richmond, Virginia

While you will find several larger dishes on the menu at Restaurant Adarra, the beauty in this Spanish-inspired restaurant lies in its small plates – wonderfully composed dishes of tinned seafood, preserved meats, and briny olives and peppers. That’s not to say you shouldn’t consider ordering a larger entree (and if you see gnocchi on the menu, do yourself a favor and order it), but don’t miss the chance to order some expertly prepared tinned fish dishes. The Restaurant List

Seasonal, Basque-inspired food and a staggering collection of organic, biodynamic wines work in lockstep at Adarra, as do husband-and-wife owners Randall and Lyne Doetzer. It’s not a proper trip to this warm, mood-setting restaurant without pintxos gildas (pickled peppers stuffed with anchovies and olives) paired with amontillado sherry and a plate of the delightfully messy gambas al ajillo (head-on garlic shrimp). Be sure to order from the sweeping collection of Spanish conservas, particularly the sardines in butter.
