The Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats (320 Rehoboth Ave.; 302/226-2739) has a new chef, Brian Manchin, and a new, more home-brew-oriented menu: beer-battered onion rings and fish 'n' chips, ale-steamed shellfish and lots of ale-based marinades (try the strip steak marinated in the chickory stout), along with wood-grilled fresh fish and lots of fresh salsas to set them off. Manchin--who's worked for the John Harvard brewpub-restaurant chain, though not in D.C.--also has a passion for supporting local producers: farmers, seafood dealers and bakers. (Commuter alert: A second Dogfish Head will open in Wilmington in November.)

That’s partly why the biggest buzz tends to surround startups that are truly novel, completely extravagant, or thoroughly engaging—an attribute that seems to have inspired the comprehensive teardown and makeover of Dogfish Head, stalwart of the beach brew scene since 1995. Creating an open courtyard with outdoor seating and a new, freestanding glass-enclosed merchandise building is the final construction phase of the multimillion dollar facelift of the Dogfish Head Rehoboth restaurant complex on Rehoboth Avenue. The courtyard, almost completed, connects Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats and its sister seafood house, Chesapeake & Maine. The project has been ongoing in stages for several years, starting with Dogfish Head's purchase of the former Finbar Pub & Grill in December 2013.

Dogfish was one of the first non-Miller Lite’s I ever tasted. I remember going to visit the one in downtown Rehoboth before they ever expanded and remodeled. It was a smaller place, often standing room only on the weekends and when there was live music.

If you drink beer then I’m sure you’ve heard of Dogfish Head Brewery. I swear I see their bottles of beer everywhere now, all over the country, but they started right here in Delaware!. So head down Rehoboth Avenue to the Brewery and restaurant.

One of my favorite breweries at the Delaware beaches is Crooked Hammock. I personally prefer their beers to Dogfish Head’s, and their Lewes brewpub is awesome. It’s huge, with lawn games, hammocks (obviously), and even a playground for the kids.
