Reviews Summary

Tally's Silver Spoon is celebrated for its unique 'fine diner' atmosphere, blending comfort food with upscale New American dishes. Diners rave about the creative menu, large portions, and friendly, attentive service, making it a standout dining destination in Rapid City. While generally highly praised, some mention potential wait times during peak hours.

"What a great experience. The history was the best. He sat us, explained the menu and some dishes in great detail and just chatted us up. He was so nice and just a happy guy. Started our experience off well.

The server arrived quickly, and she was just lovely. She too took some time with us, chatted up the restaurant and the area (we’re newbies to Rapid City).

Then the food arrived. OMG. I don’t think we said a word during dinner other than, ‘this tastes insane’ and ‘get your fork outta my plate’. Delicious. Crazy delicious. We had Bison Marsala, Carbonara and a house salad. All of which were enough for two!

Highly recommend."

M.D. Greenleaf

"Exquisite. The bison burger was delicious it was cooked perfectly and the waiter we had was terrific. My lady had the buffalo Marsala and it was also amazing. If I ever return to SD I’d come here again… don’t forget to try the dessert!!"

Jovani Penton

"From the moment we walked in, Tally’s Silver Spoon gave off a vibe that was both upscale and unpretentious. It somehow pulls off that rare balance—feeling classy without being stuffy, cozy without being kitschy.

Our server was genuinely kind and helpful, offering smart recommendations and answering all our questions without rushing us. It felt like she actually wanted us to enjoy our meal—not just turn a table.

And the food? Creative, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. It wasn’t just “good for Rapid City” or “good for a vacation town”—it was flat-out excellent. If I lived nearby, I’d be a regular.

If you’re looking for something memorable while you’re in the Black Hills area, Tally’s absolutely earns the hype."

Tally's Silver Spoon can trace its origins back to the 1930s, but today it's a creative and modern restaurant serving unique locally-sourced dishes devised by chef Benjamin Kinkel. The breakfast offerings are fairly straight-ahead, however, which is great news for pancake lovers. The pancake recipe (which hasn't changed since the 30s) results in perfectly light and fluffy, golden brown pancakes, which can be smothered in bananas, blueberries, or strawberries; stuffed with blueberries or chocolate chips; or served with eggs and bacon, ham, or sausage.

Tally’s Silver Spoon (Rapid City, SD)

As mentioned in our previous review of Vertex Sky Bar, both before and after our Centennial Trail backpacking trip, we stayed in downtown Rapid City at the historic Hotel Alex Johnson. Looking at the various options for breakfast, a simple look out the hotel window showed us that there was a very popular breakfast spot right across the street: Tally’s Silver Spoon. Even at 8am they had a healthy backlog of diners waiting out front for breakfast, so we decided to check it out.
