Over 30 years ago, a group of friends with a passion for beer realized their dream and opened South Dakota's first brewpub, The Firehouse Brewing Company, in downtown Rapid City; later, in 2014, they expanded to include Firehouse Wine Cellars, producing high-quality traditional wines sourced from top growers, including their local vineyard, Old Folsom Vineyard; due to the popularity of their wines and exceptional guest service, they expanded further with the Smokejumper Station tasting room and bistro in the Southern Hills and acquired a 12,000-square-foot building to expand their production, inviting visitors to enjoy great local beer, flavorful lunch and dinner options, and a casual, fun environment to relax with friends.

Located in the heart of downtown Rapid City, we had to wait to find a seat at the bar. That’s because the brewery is a restaurant, and we came around lunch time. We had the Bell tower lager (Kasie) and Hippie hole IPL (Lana), but were most excited to try the Downtowner (crispy French fries topped with chopped pork, brown gravy, cheese curds and bacon. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with both the beer and food. The place is obviously successful given the crowds (and a building next door devoted to merchandise) so perhaps I need another visit to understand why.
