Reviews Summary

St. Roch Fine Oysters + Bar is praised for its exceptional oysters, flavorful New Orleans-inspired cuisine, and warm, attentive service. Diners love the unique dishes, the fresh ingredients, and the overall inviting atmosphere. Some note that the interior lighting can be dim, but this does not detract from the highly enjoyable dining experience.

"The food was so good I forgot to take pictures of most of it. They have an interesting take on oysters with their different flavors. The fried shrimp was absolutely packed with flavor and the most delicious breading! I only wish we had gotten more because I was sad when it was all gone!"

"Lovely place for a Friday date night. We arrived a few minutes before 6pm and were seated right away. They offer a happy hour special for raw oysters until 6pm for fans of raw oysters. Service was fantastic, super friendly and very attentive. We shared lightly fried frog legs and blue crab claws, both very tasty. We would definitely come back and try other dishes."

"Firstly, I have to give a note of appreciation to Megan Nichols and the team at "NC Eat & Play". It is because of their "Brunch Guide to the NC Triangle" that I even knew about St. Roch. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was one of the finest dinning experiences I’ve had in a long time. My aunt and I came here for brunch on a Saturday morning at 11am. From walking in through the arched vestibule to sitting at a back booth our expectations were only on the rise.

My Meal
Frenchman’s Punch
Hama Hama Oysters (raw)
Carolina Calabash w/ Fried Catfish

Aunties Meal
Irish Coffee
Carolina Calabash w/ Fried Shrimp
Side of Grits
Beignets w/ Bourbon Caramel Sauce (shared)

We were greeted by a handful of wait staff with friendly smiles and a southern greeting. We were waited on promptly by a very hospitable man who said cheers every time we ordered or he checked on us. They take the entire order at the very beginning and course everything out in the kitchen. Every detail is thought out to the letter! They even used cut pieces of paper from outdated menus as a barrier between the dish the food came in and the plate it was on. Resourceful and deliberate in every choice they make.

And the food. Oh, the food! In a word, exquisite. The Frenchman’s Punch was very light and refreshing. A complexity of flavors that felt very southern and well balanced. The oysters were very fresh and buttery. We both ordered the Calabash and neither of us were able to finish all of it. About 15 min into the meal I realized that my fish was still steaming hot! Sometimes catfish can be oily, wet, gamy or some combination. This fish was none of those things. The breading was crispy and light while the fish was gently cooked and flavorful. The Calabash also comes with pomme frites and hushpuppies. Both were of excellent quality and perfectly cooked. The shrimp was very nice, nothing extravagant, but perfectly cooked, breading was thin and crispy (also had a little taste of paprika). These came with aioli and a buttermilk dressing, both of which were also wonderful.

I think the star of the meal was the grits. These were not your ordinary grits. They’re high-quality, course, stone ground grits made with a béchamel sauce. I have never thought of adding béchamel to grits, but that is the only way I’ll make them going forward! Closing the meal with Beignets was also phenomenal. So perfectly made with a delicious sauce (really all of the sauces were fantastic), and we savored every drop. I cannot stop thinking about this amazing meal, service and restaurant. This will now be a regular stop every time I’m in Raleigh! Thank you for a perfect meal."

The Best Restaurants In Raleigh, North Carolina

What started as a small grocery store in 1927 has grown into the 42nd Street Oyster Bar. The oysters, of which it has served over 80 million in its long history, of course take center stage, but that doesn’t mean that they’re the only option. The menu changes daily to reflect the market prices, and depending on what’s available, you will find a selection of oysters from all over the Mid-Atlantic coast, served along with descriptions of their specific flavors.

The “cliche-free New Orleans cuisine” at chef/owner Sunny Gerhart’s oyster bar + restaurant might not be exactly what you’d expect—but that’s the point. Dubbed for his childhood St. Roch Avenue address and serving as a love letter to his Louisiana roots via a playful homage, St. Roch—which formerly housed Gerhart’s mentor Ashley Christensen’s coffee shop/restaurant concept Joule—highlights seafood in a myriad of ways, whether raw, roasted, fried, smoked, BBQ’d or even in a Bolognese sauce (see the fan-fave hearty gator Bolognese). But it’s the kitschy decor, lively atmosphere and friendly service that really make this NOLA tribute feel like home.

These are the 10 must-eat restaurants in Raleigh, NC

With a history dating back to 1931, when it started out as a grocery story that sold oysters and beer, 42nd Street Oyster bar is the area’s undisputed granddaddy of seafood restaurants. A menu that embraces everything from Southern fried seafood platters to cioppino — and, naturally, a raw bar selection including several varieties of oyster — continues to attract a steady stream of customers. A pair of stainless steel art deco entry doors set a nostalgic mood for a dining room with linoleum tile floors, vintage jazz, mounted trophy fish, and a collection of license plates donated by generations of local politicians.
