We love visiting the historic City Market area of downtown Raleigh for its casual restaurants like our favorite breakfast spot, Big Ed’s and one of our go-to Italian lunch places, Vic’s Italian, but if you’re seeking a slightly upscale Sushi restaurant in the heart of the city, put City Market Sushi on your list. It might be small, but the ambiance is on point with black and white decor, decorative art adorning the walls, overhead lamps providing warm lighting, and modern wooden tables and chairs creating an intimate space perfect for a date night or dinner with friends. On the menu are creative sushi rolls, sushi plates, nigiri & sashimi and great bento box options for lunch.

Sometimes you don’t want to upgrade to specialty rolls to keep your tab down, but City Market Sushi in Fayetteville Street has some specialty rolls you just can’t turn down. Specialty rolls like the Kamikaze roll and the Green Machine roll go for only $12. The Kamikaze specialty roll has tuna, salmon, cream cheese, and tempura fried avocado on the inside and sriracha aioli, tobiko, and eel sauce on the outside, while the Green Machine roll contains avocado, asparagus, and cucumber and is topped with fried tofu and a sweet soy reduction.

City Market Sushi is a tiny restaurant in downtown Raleigh that serves the cutest and most colorful sushi in the area. On top of that, not only is it pretty, but absolutely delicious too. As soon as I saw the rolls they served, I thought they looked a lot like the ones at Temakinho, my favorite sushi restaurant in Milan.

Sushi may seem like an odd choice to travel with, but the quality of City Market Sushi is so good that I don’t even bat an eye. I can’t imagine going for a year without sushi, either, so takeout it is!. Everything from here is well seasoned, fresh and makes you feel like you’re eating a healthier to-go meal.

City Market Sushi may be a slightly more authentic sushi experience than Sushi O, but we don't love the dark indoor ambiance as much. The rolls are elevated from those at Sushi O, and you'll pay more for them.

City Market Sushi is the best downtown and Waraji in north Raleigh is the best sushi in the triangle hands down.
