Spiritus is a magnet for late-night revelers seeking pizza slices and ice cream cones, fueling an adjacent social scene sparked by those post-midnight munchies.

Please consider this my petition for Spiritus to win a James Beard Award in the category of “Outstanding Restaurant that Caters to Nightly Hoards of Drunk Gays: Northeast.” When the bars close at 1 a.m., the staff at Spiritus hunker down with unbelievable grace and dish out perfectly thin and crispy pizza to the masses. Slices at the cash-only spot are cheap: $3 for cheese, $4 for pepperoni and the killer Greek with black olives, feta, onions, and spinach. But what they lack in the town’s absurd price inflation, they make up for with million-dollar flavor.

Spiritus pizza is an old faithful and has become the staple stop between the party and the after party—so much so that the hour from 1 to 2 a.m. is called “pizza dance.” Spiritus is the only late food option in town, and after last call at the bars, the pizzeria fills up with hungry crowds, who overflow onto Commercial Street to revel in what’s essentially a nightly pizza party. There are three New York-style slices: cheese, pepperoni, or Greek (cash only!).

The Spiritus pizzeria is so interwoven with recent P’town history that it is almost hard to believe its home had an earlier life. But it did, all the way back to around 1837, when 190 Commercial Street was probably constructed for Reuben Collins II and his family. In 1892, when the building would have been denominated No. 189, his children Richard and Minnie physically divided the house between them.

Grab a slice or order a whole dang pie at Spiritus Pizza, a funky spot where, especially come evening, the front patio is packed with well-groomed men in scant shorts. Thin-crust pizzas come with all the fixings, including hearty hunks of linguica. Opt for a seat in front, or step out to the back garden, where you can linger over Emack & Bolio’s or Giffords ice cream.

For many locals, this is THE place to be after hours, arguably the place to see and be seen. Their pies promise everything a pizza should have; a thin, chewy crust, with nice sauce, cheese and toppings: exactly the thing you want after a night of drinking. Spiritus Pizza serves incredible thin-crust pizza made with USDA-certified organic flour. Big groups can share the generously-topped Spiritus Special pie to soak up a night’s worth of drinking. But if you only need a couple of slices, the fresh Greek slice with its white pizza base, spinach, and olives will hit the spot.

The best pizza on the Outer Cape - fist fights over that verdict have always been welcomed and won. Spiritus is also a lively, late-night spot known for its thin-crust pizzas and fun atmosphere. The Pepperoni Pizza, with its crispy crust and generous toppings, is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

As a secular Jew with a stubbornly devout stomach, I had to make a decision. Indulging in a scoop requires a complex cost-benefit analysis: does the pleasure of ingesting ice cream outweigh the pain of digesting it?. Almost everywhere the answer is yes, and the counter at Spiritus is no exception.
