On Sunday, gather by the MacMillan Pier to watch the ceremonial Blessing of the Fleet, when local families march down to the marina in a festive parade, with their boats decorated colorfully and “blessed” for the upcoming year.

WHERE TO GRAB A COFFEE IN DOG-FRIENDLY PROVINCETOWN – The obvious choice would be the Wired Puppy!. Repeatedly voted the best coffee in Provincetown they also offer mugs bearing the manic dog logo. (FYI – the branch in Boston offers prime people-watching from a Brownstone stoop on shopaholic Newbury Street) Also consider the dog-friendly front terrace at The Purple Feather – unmissable on account on the boa-bedecked bear at the door and famous for multi-layered cupcakes including the lip-smacking Peanut Butter Awesomeness!

Later, we thought it would be crazy not to visit The Nut House, so we did, browsing the large selection of glazed, roasted, and chocolate-covered nuts and other treats. At Cabot’s Candy, we chatted with employees Sherica Williams-Ricketts and Kerene Dyer, both of Jamaica.

On my own, I also stopped at the Provincetown Portuguese Bakery, which not only is a bakery but also serves breakfast and lunch. With Tibor Bago as the main chef, the bakery sells a variety of appealing Portuguese pastries, breads and more, and they all look enticing. I had to order the Malassada, a type of Portuguese donut which resembles fried dough, and it was well worth it, especially if they are still warm.

A town landmark, the Provincetown Portuguese Bakery and Coffee Shop (299 Commercial St., 508-487-1803) is much loved for its authentic and inexpensive menu. Be sure to try the Portuguese sweet bread or the sponge cake with Bavarian crème.
