Opened by a journalist cum restaurateur, the Canteen, P-town’s upbeat answer to the classic New England seafood shack, casually offers upmarket staples like hand-shucked lobster rolls on buttered brioche, and crispy Brussels sprouts in chili fish sauce. To cool down, its backyard bar overlooks the beach and serves a frozen Dark and Stormy.

Brooklyn ex-pats Sean Gardner and Rebecca Orchant’s quirky sandwich shop Pop + Dutch, named after Gardner’s grandparents, offers up healthy options like smashed chickpea salad, sandwiches with house-roasted meats, and a desserty masterpiece called “The Fluffernutella.” Jars of condoms — in the spirit of the original establishment, dubbed the Lube ’n’ Deli — sit on the counter alongside dog treats and jugs of lemonade and coffee. The fridges are stocked with fresh potato salad, pimento cheese, chicken salad, dolmas, and a variety of drinks including a great Arnold Palmer.

On your way to Herring Cove, hit up Pop and Dutch for lunch or a hangover-curing breakfast sandwich. Last-stop beach food and supplies can be found at Relish or the small market at Gale Force Bikes. East End has Angel Foods and East End Market, which both offer a wide range of breakfast and lunch options, as well as wine and beer for your cooler.

POP & DUTCH at 147 Commercial St. is a shabby chic establishment with excellent sandwiches, a large selection of very good prepared salads and sides, and a few window seats for those staying. The choices don't vary much but they are reliable. In fact, by a recent July 2019 visit, the choices were as they were several years ago.

Stop into Pop+Dutch, the sandwich-slinging, hottie-filled general store/dune shack of your dreams. Order a Danny DeVito (sandwich, not actor) and grab a pint of peach-and-panzanella salad to go. Stop by Perry’s of Provincetown down the street for a nice bottle of wine—you’ve got yourself quite a picnic.
