Reviews Summary

Gift Horse is celebrated for its incredibly fresh seafood, particularly its extensive raw bar with diverse regional oysters. Guests rave about the artistic ambiance and inventive cocktails, as well as the friendly and knowledgeable staff who offer excellent recommendations. While many find the experience outstanding and well worth the price, a few diners have noted that some dishes may not consistently reach the heights suggested by awards, leading to a mixed impression of the cooked menu items.

"Came here at 4pm for the oyster happy hour. The place filled up quickly! Super friendly staff and we loved the artistic and intimate decor and setting. Great vibe and nice place to hang out that’s for sure. Cocktail list was amazing and well crafted.

The main event - 11 different types of oysters from the region. All excellent and fresh. My suggestion is to tell the server your preference, start with a variety then go for second (or third) rounds. Staffs had great knowledge and we had a fun time.

The other raw dishes were fantastic too.

Note that hot food is only available after 5pm."

"I came here while in town on business. I was looking for good seafood and Gift Horse was highly recommended so I stopped by and it did not disappoint!
The oysters were fresh, the Sacllop Crudo was out of this world and the drinks were exceptional. What really made my evening was the bartender/waitress Rachel, who was very welcoming and helpful. She had amazing recommendations based on my tastes (luckily I eat everything) and she was truly a warm, friendly and happy person to work with. I am already planning another trip to Providence and will be back mostly for Rachel and her amazing service! Thank you!"

Marco Guanilo

"Super cute place with delicious oysters and some fun happy hour options. Gets a little snug in the bar area but in the clerb were all friends. Or however that goes.

Seriously a very fun space to be in, on top of the great food. They have really nice business cards too!"

The Best Places to Eat in Providence, Rhode Island, According to an Award-winning Chef and Local Expert

This cleverly named full-service raw bar was a delightful stop, with a horseshoe-shaped bar displaying rows of oysters surrounded by crushed ice, and above colorful stained glass with a rather quizzical looking cartoon horse. The atmosphere is lively, and fresh shellfish, including more than ten types of local oysters, littleneck clams, mussels, and scallops, served with unique sauces. Cooked dishes are on the menu too, with crispy oysters, whole fish, a buttered scallop roll, monkfish toast, and more.

The 23 Best Restaurants In Providence - Providence

If Gift Horse (the newer, buzzy restaurant from the folks at Oberlin) could be summed up in two words, it would be weird and fishy—and we mean this in the best way possible. A boggle-eyed horse stares out from a stained glass montage above the bar, while whale sounds play in the bathroom. At the center of it all is the raw bar, a glittering seafood shrine of ice, shellfish, and crustaceans.

25 Must-Visit Restaurants in Providence, Rhode Island

Gift Horse is the second project from the team behind Oberlin (see below)—chef-owner Benjamin Sukle and general manager/partner Bethany Caliaro—and its menu and dining room are anything but ordinary. Chilled fresh-caught lobster with pickled shiso leaves and lobster roe mayo, smoked fish dip with preserved peppers and puffed nori for dipping, and a show-stopping crispy whole fish ssam served with banchan, rice, and spicy peanut ssamjan g are only a few of the imaginative dishes you’ll find alongside a robust list of Rhode Island’s finest oysters. Pair your snacks with a glass of natural wine, craft beer, non-alcoholic beverage, or a cocktail (each one is served in its own special glass).
