What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kann offers a deeply satisfying and culturally rich Haitian dining experience, praised for its flavorful and elevated dishes, stunning ambiance, and attentive service. While many rave about the unique taste combinations and the overall experience, some find the pricing to be on the higher side, and during peak times, service can feel a bit rushed. Despite minor concerns, it's widely considered a must-visit for its exceptional food and memorable atmosphere.
"I came to Kann for my birthday and left feeling super full and proud. The moment we walked in, I could tell this place was something special. The design is stunning. Every detail felt intentional, from the lighting to the hardware. It’s clear a lot of care went into creating the space.
As a Haitian, it brought me so much joy to see a Haitian restaurant thriving at this level. The food was phenomenal — we had the creamed greens, the short rib, jasmine rice with sos pwa, and a creative and balanced salad with toasted coconut and winter greens. Everything was layered with flavor and presented with care. You could tell these recipes were rooted in culture but elevated.
The drinks were also good! Though I was expecting to see some variation of cremas on the menu.
The service was just as memorable. Our servers were kind, knowledgeable, and gave great advice on how to enjoy the dishes.
Kann is definitely an experience. And for me, it was a proud, joyful one. I’ll definitely be back."

"Genuinely one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. New flavors I wish could have for every meal, a new experience I can't wait to experience again. There's not much else I can say that others haven't said - at the end of the day you would be doing yourself a favor experiencing this beautiful food. The spice, the savory meat, the comforting soup, everything was amazing. Must visit spot!"

"I REALLY wanted to love Kann, I am a big fan of Chef Gregory and after watching people rave about his cooking on Top Chef I was excited to try it. The restaurant is beautiful, we sat at the chefs counter which is always fun.
Unfortunately it was a bit of a miss for me mostly because of the pricing. $14 for a 2 inch cube of bread that was not very good. $32 for 3 slices of lab grown salmon? Thats crazy. I understand that this is a higher end restaurant but it does just feel over priced for no reason.
Prices aside the food was over all fine - the stands out were the Tarro fritters, the smoke wildtype salmon and the desserts. The peach tartlette and the baked haiti were very good.
Most of the food was just ok, nothing I would come back for or even really think about after. The aforementioned bread was a big miss. The Hiramasa wasn't very exciting and the signature Griyo pork was actually lacking a lot of flavor, even the pikliz didn't have much going on.
Over all I wouldnt come back or recommend this place."

Restaurants in Portland
Top Chef celebrity Gregory Gourdet looked to his heritage (he was raised in New York City by parents who had immigrated from Haiti) in developing this beautifully designed restaurant that, thanks to a tidal wave of critical acclaim, is now one of the most sought-after reservations on the West Coast. Everything that comes out of Kann's kitchen bursts with flavor and color—think lightly seared butterfish with lemongrass, mint, and green-apple shaved ice, and cane syrup–glazed breast and leg of duck with pineapple and tamarind. Reservations are a must, and it's advisable to book at least a couple of months in advance.
The 21 Best Restaurants In Portland, Oregon - Portland, OR
Kann is by far the biggest Portland restaurant opening in the past couple of years. Maybe that has something to do with a former Top Chef contestant in the kitchen, or the fact that they smoke their own meats over a live fire. We think it’s because the Haitian-ish, family-style meal here always feels like a party—and one you’ll never want to leave.
The 40 best restaurants in Portland you need to try
At our 2022 Restaurant of the Year, star chef Gregory Gourdet has built his dream restaurant, a gold-accented fantasia of house plants, well-dressed diners and abstract art evoking a Caribbean sunset. Fizzy pink cocktails sail through the room as Gourdet and his team conjure a near-mythical vision of Haitian cuisine from behind the long chef’s counter, with dishes traditional and imagined charred to perfection on the kitchen’s roaring hearth. Here, taro root fritters, braised-then-fried griyo pork and soursop shave ice make a persuasive argument that Caribbean food deserves the same respect Portlanders give to Italian, Japanese or Thai.
Portlands 25 Best New Restaurants for 2022
If you’ve read this far down a new restaurant list, I’ll assume you’ve either already heard about Kann, the new wood-fired Haitian restaurant from “Top Chef” star Gregory Gourdet, or have spent the last few years living under a rock. Gourdet, who first announced plans to open a restaurant of his own in 2019, explores the flavors of Haiti, where his parents were born before moving to New York. The restaurant is gorgeous, with white walls, gold accents and open sightlines throughout the dining room and kitchen, where Gourdet can be spotted finishing plates of epis-rubbed chicken or smoked beef ribs with herbs and oil.

It is a city that can be overwhelming white, so it is counterintuitive that it has great in its food.
