Reviews Summary

Green Elephant Vegetarian Bistro is highly praised for its flavorful pan-Asian vegetarian and vegan dishes, with many diners highlighting the bold flavors and fresh ingredients. The restaurant excels in accommodating dietary needs, offering both vegetarian and gluten-free options, and chefs can modify many dishes to be vegan. While the food receives widespread acclaim, some diners have experienced issues with service, particularly regarding seating and wait times during busy periods, which can detract from the overall dining experience.

"First time at Green Elephant as we’ve been wanting to try for some time and finally decided to stop in. We had such a wonderful experience all across the board from great customer service, cozy & quaint vibes to the amazing food. I tried the Green Curry Tofu and Absolutely loved it such Flavor and a generous portion. My husband and I will definitely return!"

"Green Elephant is an absolute gem! It’s incredibly hard to find a place that serves truly excellent Thai food, and even more rare to find one that’s entirely vegetarian and vegan-friendly. But Green Elephant absolutely delivers!

Every dish I tried was packed with bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Their vegan options are outstanding—thoughtfully prepared and incredibly delicious. Whether you’re plant-based or not, you’ll find something to love here. The desserts are also a must-try, with a great selection that perfectly complements the meal.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service was top-notch. I had an amazing experience and can’t wait to come back. If you’re in Portland and looking for exceptional Thai-inspired cuisine, Green Elephant is the place to go!"

"We took a long driving trip thru the New England coastal area all the way up to Maine. One of the many overnight stops we made was Portland. We researched this restaurant before we left home and it was better than expected. We ordered several dishes at lunch and we shared all.
Very nice."

The vegan and vegetarian restaurants that went and came from Maine

This past year also saw Maine’s best-known vegetarian restaurant, the Green Elephant in Portland, celebrate 15 years in business; the number of ice cream parlors selling vegan flavors expanded; juice shops slinging smoothies seeped into all corners of the state; and vegan doughnut demand, as always, continued to be greater than supply (with She Doesn’t Like Guthries in Lewiston one of the latest spots making vegan doughnuts). With the bright skies of 2023 and a whole month of Veganuary ahead of us, all signs point to more vegan restaurant meals, more vegan doughnuts and more vegan ice cream as the new year unfolds.

Vegan Options in Portland, Maine

Green Elephant Vegetarian Bistro opened its doors in 2007, aiming to be one of Portland’s top restaurants for mindful eating. Here, Chef (and owner) Dan Sriprasert unites “ingredients and flavors from Malaysia, Japan, China, India and Thailand into a meat-free menu with something for everyone.” No meat can be found on the menu, and the fully vegan items are called out appropriately. Their crispy wontons could rival the best crab rangoon you may have ever had in your pre-vegan life, and their pad Thai and spicy vegetable medley stir fry comes in spice levels 1-4.
