What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
S&D Polish Deli is celebrated for its authentic homemade pierogi and extensive selection of Eastern European groceries. Reviewers consistently praise the friendly service and the cozy, family-run atmosphere. While some note that it's more of a market than a sit-down restaurant, the quality of the food and the unique imported products make it a must-visit for fans of Polish cuisine.
"Wonderful Polish deli! Home made pierogis, kielbasa, pastries, condiments, etc. Fresh as well as frozen. It was busy. You can get meals. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Worth a visit to stock up on your Polish supplies."
Michael Siuta
"Atmosphere- 3 stars- this a takeout/store/deli. Can get very crowded and have a long line depending on the day and time. Not a lot of room to move around and browse.
If you’re not into Polish cuisine, the menu might feel limited. It’s heavy on traditional fare like pierogi, kielbasa, and stuffed cabbage — delicious but not particularly diverse.
Service- 4 stars- it’s hard to rank this because it is counter service. Employees seemed friendly enough though.
Food- 4 stars- 5. Not Made to Order: Much of the food is prepared ahead of time and kept warm — more deli-style than restaurant-style, so don’t expect made-from-scratch speed or presentation. I had the pierogis as well as the Haluski which both were good. The pierogis were stuffed with potatoes and covered with butter and onions but not excessive. They were very filling. Not the best I ever had but not bad. The Haluski was a bit better and was a decent sized serving- fried cabbage, noodles, some kind of cheese and covered with bacon bits. Would get this again.
Not a bad place to stop in for a quick bite but I would not make this my main stop for a full meal."

"A gem. It’s really a market with limited seating, but you can find all you need to eat there. The pierogi were incredible, one of the best textures I’ve had. The haluski comes in different varieties but all good. Also an amazing desert section."

But the city’s immigrant story is still preserved there in the hand-painted signs, vendors, truckloads of produce, and old standbys like Robert Wholey & Co. seafood market (1711 Penn Ave), Mediterranean and Asian grocers Salem’s (2923 Penn Ave) and Lotus Food Co. (1649 Penn Ave), S&D Polish Deli (2204 Penn Ave), and the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company or “Penn Mac” (2010-2012 Penn Ave), where as a teen I made pecorino and prosciutto runs for my family of hungry Italians. You can’t hit the Strip without a stop at the OG Primanti Bros. (46 18th St), renowned since 1930 for its fries-and-slaw sandwiches, first made to keep truckers fed on their southbound routes. My regular order is the Pitts-Burger and Cheese; add a fried egg and that’s a piece of sandwich art.

There are the umpteen, uncountable dive bars offering plates of pierogies, cementing the humble dumpling’s place in the canon of exceptional beer-friendly foods. Then, there are the hip, new-wave bars and restaurants with pierogies on the menu, like comfy gastropub Butterjoint and the much-lauded vegan Polish cocktail bar, Apteka

Dorota and Slawomir Pyszkowski opened their Strip District market in 2008 as a means to connect Pittsburgh’s Polish community, as well as a broader audience, with food from their homeland. The couple returned to Poland last year and sold the business to Gretchen and Matt McDaniel; the duo plan to continue the Pyszkowksi’s mission to celebrate the cuisine of Poland. In fact, general manager Agnieszka Sornek says that the kitchen’s offerings likely are going to expand over the next few years.
