The Best Restaurants in Philadelphia
Opened in 2011 in a historic brownstone, Vedge is widely considered one of the best vegan restaurants in America. Even such veganism-averse food critics as Alan Richman have sung its praises, and chef Rich Landau and his wife, Kate Jacoby, the pastry chef at Vedge, have both been nominated for James Beard awards. Landau works with ingredients that traditionally send carnivores running (tofu, seitan), but inventive dishes—such as salt-roasted beets layered with avocado, smoked tofu, and pickle mustard, a play on pastrami on rye—upend their hippie-dippie reputation.
The eight best vegan restaurants in Philadelphia
Led by superstars of the local vegan dining scene, James-Beard nominated chefs Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby, Vedge is a self proclaimed ‘vegetable restaurant' with a months-long waitlist. A fine dining establishment that many reserve for special occasions, the quality of the food is matched by its charming setting inside a renovated brownstone, complete with working fireplaces. Fresh produce is the star of each dish at Vedge (as opposed to some places that imitate meaty fare), and crowd favorites are the velvety rutabaga fondue and wood-roasted carrots.
Where To Drink Great Wine In Philadelphia - Philadelphia
Vedge might be one of the most expensive places to drink wine in Philly - there’s a $750 bottle of Montepulciano on the menu - but it’s also one of the best. The vegan fine-dining spot in Midtown Village has been around since 2011, and they’ve been championing natural and organic wine since they opened. While the menu is on the pricey side, you don’t have to spend your entire tax return on a bottle here.
Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Philadelphia
Time and again, Vedge is listed not only as Philadelphia’s best vegan restaurant, but as one of the city’s best overall. Since opening in 2011, they’ve pushed the envelope and exceeded expectations for plant-based cooking, inspiring dozens of other restaurants to do the same. Anyone who thinks vegan food can't be flavorful hasn't eaten at Vedge. Not only is this friendly and inviting Center City restaurant the best vegan/vegetarian joint in Philly and the entire United States (by leaps and bounds, it might very well be among the best restaurants. Period. The husband and wife team who run the kitchen at Vedge manage to produce amazingly flavorful French-inspired dishes that are so decadent, it's hard to believe they're not made with heaps of butter and cream. These creative culinary chefs do simply amazing things with brussel sprouts, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cauliflower and other garden-friendly foods. Vegetarian Food in Philadelphia - Sagemenu
Vedge has some of the most flavorful and unique vegan and vegetarian dishes I've had. I recently went with a group of my friends, and we had a family style and tried every dish on the menu. My personal favorites were the Smoked Portobello Carpaccio (very fresh and light), Spicy Dan Dan Noodles (definitely does have a kick so be prepared), and the Brassicas Hot Pot with Charred Caullini & Broccoli (the pho broth was so good). The service was professional and our server had great conversation. The old mansion is charming and a great date night place. The prices are on the higher end, so be prepared. Would definitely love to come back again.
The Best Places to Drink Wine in Philadelphia
This pioneering vegan restaurant was not only among the first upscale restaurants to showcase a small, focused wine list, but owner and wine director Kate Jacoby was also one of the first natural wine devotees in Philly. Featuring one of the city’s most beautiful interiors—the restaurant occupies a Victorian mansion with ornate original details as far as the eye can see—the scene here is refreshingly mixed. And there’s no lifestyle manifesto to be found on the menu, just seriously good cooking that has had many a meat eater overlook the obvious omission.
Where to Eat in Philadelphia
In the last decade or so, vegetarian and vegan restaurants have managed to shed their reputation as being nothing more than glorified salad bars. Stylishly modern Vedge shatters that restrictive notion with a progressive menu of tapas-style plates like smoked eggplant, cauliflower, and chickpeas a with a punched-up salsa verde. Farm-fresh vegetables can be ordered from the cheeky ‘dirt list’ and a steak-spice seared tofu with chanterelles, kabocha squash, and madeira will convince, and possibly convert, even the staunchest carnivores.

When Vedge opened in 2011, it paved the way for a thriving vegan scene in this city, declaring that rutabaga and chard and beets shouldn’t simply be relegated to the side of your plate — they should be cared for and crafted as the main event of your meal. This guide (and this city’s restaurant landscape) would look distinctly different without its legacy. Romantic Restaurants in Philadelphia, PA
I went in thinking “vegan fine dining” would be interesting—but I left thinking, “This is what creativity tastes like.” The old brownstone setting gave it a cozy, lived-in elegance, while the plates were pure modern art. I remember the wood-roasted carrots, smoky and tender, topped with tahini and pomegranate—completely unexpected and completely perfect. The atmosphere was candlelit and calm, the kind of place where you could talk in whispers and still feel heard.
