Reviews Summary

Hardena is lauded for its authentic Indonesian cuisine, generous portions, and warm, family-run atmosphere. Diners rave about unique flavors and vegetarian options. However, some reviews mention that the food can be overly greasy or pricey for the dining environment, with occasional concerns about certain dishes not meeting expectations.

"Such great flavors and huge portion sizes. I loved the way everything was cooked and the bold, tastiness of the various dishes. Tried the egg/tofu, collard greens, goat, potatoes, fritter, and jackfruit stew. Standouts were definitely the potatoes and jackfruit stew! Would highly recommend this spot."

"Hate doing this. This is a mom & pop run restaurant. Hard working people. I was disappointed with the food. Beef rendang was below average. Chicken is overcooked and tuff. Mix vegetables was tasteless. I know my Indonesian food very well. Traveled there a few times. I am not Indonesian. My expectations are high. If you don't know the cuisine, you might like it."

Dominick Withanachchi

"Delicious Indonesian food at a family-owned and oriented restaurant. There is indoor seating but all the tables are occupied by families most times I go, so you know it’s amazing! Plate portions are great - even my boyfriend has leftovers and he’s usually able to finish his food. I especially LOVE the vegetarian options, and I’m not even vegetarian. The menu is often rotating, but there are consistently amazing vegetarian alternatives to the meat dishes. Occasionally there are goat dishes which are always a treat as well! The red pepper potatoes are my guilty pleasure and I could eat a whole plate of that alone."

Hardena, a small corner spot near East Passyunk, has a lot of choices. For your meat-eating friends, there’s beef rendang and a goat stew to top their rice plate. But for vegetarians, there’s even better stuff, like tempeh and vegetables in a sweet soy sauce, and some of the best collard greens we’ve ever had.

Where to Eat Vegan Food in Philly

Hardena is one of those glorious Philly restaurant nucleuses where someone who is vegan and a meat-eater might order the same exact meal without realizing it. The Indonesian food simmering on the steam table kicks ass across the board — be it a large platter of rice topped with super-savory oseng tempeh, collards stewed in coconut milk, sayur lodeh, or a vegetable stew. Come for a casual weeknight dinner (or for takeout) when you want home-cooked food but wish someone else would make it.

This brightly colored corner restaurant could very well be the best place to get familiar with Indonesian fare, due to its point-and-pick steam-table setup. Just decide whether you're eating in or taking out and ask one of the friendly members of the owner's family to walk you though the day's offerings. Beef rendang is a must but don't sleep on the coconut milk–braised collard greens or the stewed tempeh.
