Reviews Summary

Amma's South Indian Cuisine is praised for its authentic and flavorful dishes, particularly its signature dosas and variety of curries. While many enjoy the warm ambiance and attentive service, some diners have experienced inconsistent service and lukewarm food, leading to a mixed dining experience. Despite these occasional drawbacks, the restaurant remains a popular spot for those seeking genuine South Indian flavors.

"I got the meat version of the South Indian Meal and it was amazing! So good to try different things, even if you're by yourself. Nothing was too spicy or too mild, but there were a mix of spice levels and different kinds of flavors that I enjoyed. It came with a little rice pudding too which was perfect."

"I think my earlier review was taken down.

Posting again.

Starts with one liner "avg restaurant"

Heard of it, also good rating over google. Planned a dinner, and experience was not good. Had to wait for almost 40 minutes to get the food. Even some who came after us got the food and left too. Food wise it's good, but service is just pretty poor."

"Fisrt visit to Amma's restaurant, since it had so many reviews we thought its going to be great.
Casual dinning place, food was good Rawa Dosa, Masala dosa, Idly , chutneys were fresh and tasty. I odered Dum Goat Biryani but it took about almost 25mins plus after asking the manager, while my friends had almost finished the dinner.Biryani was just ok ,had better ones in other places.
Service has some seroius issues here , even after bringing the food one by one, they added 20% Gratuity to the bill we were just four people on the table, after all this delayed experience. So after speaking to the manager who handled the situation very well, so kudos to him, he took out the gratuity.
So food is good , service needs to be better, food has to comeout at sametime, not one by one."

The 10 Best Indian Restaurants In Philadelphia - Philadelphia

You're bound to over-order at this busy South Indian restaurant in Center City. That's just what happens at a place that smells this good and has a menu the size of a children's picture book. There are typically specials like mutton curry with spicy onion and tomato gravy, a creamy paneer butter masala, and stacks of warm parotta—all of which are great.

You’ll want to order takeout from these 7 Philly restaurants

This is one comeback that makes me especially happy, because the flavors of Center City’s recent South Indian boom were conspicuously absent. Amma’s, despite a strong existing takeout business, decided to close early in the lockdown. One month later, co-owner Sathish Varadhan and his partners have mastered the protocols, added their own delivery service (call direct) to delivery app collaborations, and are back cooking the kind of bold South Indian specialties that made Amma’s one of my Top 25 restaurants in 2019.

The 12 Best Indian Restaurants in Philadelphia

Northern India’s curries, tandoori dishes and bread abound in Philadelphia, but South Indian cuisine is harder to find — and just as delish. Enter Amma’s, a heartfelt tribute to South Indian home cooking from chefs and co-owners Sathish Varadhan and Balakrishnan “Bala” Duraisamy. Taking inspiration from the chefs’ family recipes, the menus at Amma’s (which means mom in Tamil) include traditional South Indian entrees like idli, dosas and dum biryanis and read like books.

A Gluten Free Plate

Gluten free restaurants in Philadelphia

Amma’s South Indian Cuisine is a popular Indian restaurant that locals regularly cite as being one of their favorite Indian restaurants in the city. While we have never had Indian food in Philadelphia that really blew us away, we would agree Amma’s is one of the better spots we have been to in the city. They do serve some bread products and sides that contain gluten, but they have a labeled gluten free menu and all of their entrees and curries are naturally gluten free.

People go to Amma’s with high expectations and the restaurant always exceeds those expectations. The dining room is warm and inviting, the staff is friendly, and the paneer masala dosa alone will keep you coming back for more. Unlike North Indian cuisine, South Indian cuisine is a whole different thing. If you haven't experienced it, start with the Masala Dosa, a huge gluten-free, crispy crepe filled with spiced (but not spicy) potatoes. The sambar soup that comes with the Masala Dosa can be a little spicy, but they also serve it with a cooling coconut chutney.
