Despite Utah’s reputation as a dry state (due to the state’s dominant religion forbidding alcohol consumption), Park City is home to an award-winning distillery. In fact, Whisky Advocate named High West its 2016 Distiller of the Year – a huge honor for any booze brand, let alone one based in Utah. You can tour the distillery just outside of town, or simply sample the goods at the downtown saloon; just be warned that the state of Utah forbids free alcohol samples, so there's a charge for the tour's whiskey flights.

If you only have time to visit one restaurant while you’re in Park City, prioritize High West Saloon. The hometown distillery is basically mountain town perfection—the inside feels like an old-school saloon, the cocktails use the best of High West’s whiskey lineup, and you can theoretically ski right up to the restaurant in the winter. The menu features elevated versions of pub food, including a pretzel with whiskey-infused beer cheese and a burger smeared with bacon onion jam and two kinds of cheese.

When you’re ready to call it a day on the slopes, take Park City Mountain Resort’s Quittin’ Time run down to High West, the world’s only ski-in gastro-distillery. Tour the space, then try the 36th Vote Barreled Manhattan, made from a pre-Prohibition cocktail recipe that calls for aging the drink for 90 days in white oak barrels. The food goes down pretty easily, too: A bowl of elk chili will warm you right down to the toes of your ski socks.

No trip to Park City is complete without a stiff drink at High West Distillery. Their saloon is conveniently positioned at the end of the in-town Quitin’ Time Trail, making it an easy place to loosen up those ski boots. In addition to the whiskey cocktails, the Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs and Pastrami-Spiced Chicken Wings are exactly what you crave after a day on the mountain.

Yet Utah’s once-obscure distillery has become something of a regional powerhouse in recent years, with a second cottage location for prix fixe dinners in Park City, another location at the Salt Lake City airport, and its distillery location in nearby Wanship, which is also open for tours and tastings. Named Distiller of the Year by Whisky Advocate in 2016 and sold that same year to Constellation Brands for $160 million, High West is clearly Utah’s king of craft distilling.

When the opportunity recently came to travel to Park City, Utah — thanks, in large part, to the support of the promotional teams of Deer Valley Resort, UGG, NordicTrack, Montage Deer Valley, Marmot, High West, iFit, CeraVe, Clif Bar, Hearth And Hill, Smith, Swiftwick, the St. Regis Deer Valley and the Stein Eriksen Lodge — I jumped at the chance. Thirty-five minutes by car from Salt Lake City International Airport (a hub of Delta Airlines, with direct flights to New York, London, Paris, and Amsterdam), Park City’s population is well under 10,000 residents. However, the Sundance Film Festival alone regularly brings tens of thousands of people into the city.

High West helped kickstart the movement in 2006 when it opened at the foot of Park City Resort, the world’s first ski-in gastro distillery. And while they were sourcing much of that juice from outside the state—specifically MGP, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana—the blends and finishes they incorporated into a rye-centric portfolio were enough to turn heads. Because of its prominent placement amidst the annual melee of the Sundance Film Festival, bottles such as Rendezvous Rye and a limited edition, genre-blending Bourye, a bourbon and rye combo, instantly found a high-profile national audience.

Have The Montage shuttle drop you and your pup off at the High West Saloon, just off of Main Street. Get seated at a table on their patio and enjoy an evening of sipping whiskey, people watching, and enjoying the day turn to dusk. Indulge in a meal of pork spareribs with citrus garlic glaze sesame seeds and Niman ranch sirloin carne asada tacos with ranchero crema, pickled onions, and cotija, followed by the s'more cookie filled with mill creek chocolate, graham cracker bits, and marshmallow, all paired with one of their fantastic High West Old Fashioneds.

One of our favorite spots was the High West Distillery & Saloon where we enjoyed handcrafted cocktails with our bison burger and Parmesan fries. At Chimayo, a popular dinner spot offering dishes from Southern Mexico to Southern Utah, we loved the lobster and corn chowder, as well as the Smoked Citrus and Serrano Branzino dish. For breakfast, I highly recommend venturing off Main Street to Five5eeds where I ate the best breakfast item I’ve ever had: a hotcake topped with mixed berries, lemon infused mascarpone, nuts, seeds and edible flowers.

No proper Park City pilgrimage is complete without a stop at High West, Utah’s first legal distillery since 1870 and still the reigning monarch of après-ski imbibing. Housed in a restored livery stable and saloon at the foot of the slopes, the gastro-distillery delivers on both frontier charm and cocktail craft. While Utah’s liquor laws remain famously uptight, the state’s history with hooch runs deep — pioneers once passed off whiskey as “medicine,” and even Brigham Young’s anti-saloon stance couldn’t keep the stills silent for long.

Located in a nicely restored 1914 Victorian house, High West Distillery is the only distillery in the world where you can almost literally ski in – the building is at the bottom of the Quittin’ Time ski run. It is a fun, rustic place where you can see the original copper pot still that is still functional and learn about the distilling process that produces the wonderful amber liquid in your glass. They make a large range of whiskies and vodkas, and you can try them at the Saloon or have some fun cocktails based on their products.

Chances are if you’ve been to any bars on the East Coast, West Coast, and even overseas in the past several years, you’ve spotted the iconic High West Distillery brand gracing shelves around the world. In 2006, High West Distillery opened a restored historic property at the base of Park City Mountain’s Town Lift rendering it the world’s first ski in, ski out distillery and Utah’s first legal distillery since 1870. While the ever-popular saloon remains intact, the real operation in Wanship is open for distillery tours and tastings.

Holy hell, this award-winning distillery known primarily for its small batch whiskies has become the belle of Park City, liquor laws be damned. A reservation for dinner is a must, but you can kill time in the adjacent Saloon drinking lethal libations like the Rusty Miner (HW’s Double Rye! and Campfire whiskies, Drambuie, and flamed orange peel) or Bandit Queen (Double Rye!, Ruby Port, Allspice Dram, Punt e Mes, and fresh lemon juice). There are also flights and an extensive list of other, non-house spirits for you to choose from.

Step into High West Saloon, a rustic western distillery in an old livery stable, boasting exposed wood beams and dark paneling, which is widely celebrated for its warm staff, upscale alpine fare, and award-winning spirits. The saloon has the honor of being “the world’s only ski-in gastro distillery,” making it the perfect way to tie a ribbon around the day and add a lively pop to your night. Whether a whiskey aficionado or novice, you’ll find the flight selections are a great way to appreciate the mystery of High West’s craft.

A trip to Park City wouldn’t be complete without at least one visit to High West’s Saloon, the in-town restaurant by Utah-based whiskey brand High West. Modeled after a classic, Old West watering hole (complete with a grand wood bar, reclaimed wood walls, and stacked whisky barrels), the restaurant features stick-to-your-ribs mountain fare like bacon-spiked mac and cheese, lamb stew, and a gooey, 8-ounce bison and beef burger with broiled Gruyère. Just be warned: The restaurant doesn’t take reservations and is always—always!

Despite the significant (and sober) Mormon population, the craft distilling and brewing scene are blossoming in Utah these days, including right here in Park City where High West Distillery reigns supreme. Stop by their saloon for a tour and finish off with a meal and craft cocktails featuring their whiskeys or take the short drive out to Wanship to visit their new distillery on the Blue Sky Ranch. But don't stop there, you'll want to hit all the stops on our roadmap to beers, wine, and spirits in town.

The only ski-in distillery in the whole of the world, the High West lies at the bottom of the Park City Mountain Resort’s snow-coated slopes. Since opening in 2006, it has won numerous awards and accolades for its wonderful whiskeys and now has four unique locations in Park City and nearby Salt Lake City. Located in a beautiful old building that was once a livery stable, the rustic interior is home to a full-service bar and exhibits the original copper pot whiskey still.

It sits just outside the excellent High West Distillery & Restaurant, the world’s only ski-in/ski-out distillery and Park City’s premier choice for après and a great spot for lunch. A trail runs right down under the lift, and this makes the heart of town essentially slopeside. But for most skiers, the Town Lift is a better place to end than begin, since it is only within walking distance of a few lodging entities, mainly Marriott vacation rentals and the luxe Main & Sky.

Head to Blue Sky Utah (27649 Old Lincoln Hwy, 435.252.0662), a luxury adventure ranch in Wanship, 16 miles east of Park City, which is also home to High West Distillery (435.649.8300). At Blue Sky, you can book a session at the Lars Magnuson-designed multistation clay-shooting course. Those in the mood for something a little more soothing might embark on a three-hour snowshoe and yoga excursion (Park City Yoga Adventures, 415.695.4502) to a cozy, woodstove-heated yurt.

You can get quite a few experiences at High West Distillery and Saloon après-ski. Opt for a tour or a pour of rye, bourbon, or other limited-release spirits in the contemporary tasting room in Wanship, UT. Or mosey on over to the rustic Saloon for a grilled pork tomahawk and wet your whistle with the specialty cocktail Dead Man’s Boots (Rendezvous Rye, El Jimador Reposado tequila, lime juice, and Fever Tree Ginger Beer) in the Park City saloon.

RoHa Brewing Project was started after a years-long friendship that began at a monthly beer school session between Chris Haas (the Ha in RoHa), one of Utah’s craft brewing pioneers, and Rob Phillips (the Ro in RoHa), a passionate home brewer. Fast forward to today and they are producing and serving some high-quality beers in one of the smaller taprooms of the Salt Lake City breweries. But don’t let the small taproom size deter you.

Open seven days a week from 11:00 AM through 9:00 PM, High West was Utah’s first distillery — as opened in the 1870s — and is the only ski-in gastro-distillery in the world. I wished I could have visited the actual distillery, which I’ve heard is gorgeous (and was booked up for the times I was available), but this was the next-best thing. They have a patio for when it’s nice outside, and a surprising amount of space/seating.

**Though many think of Utah as being dry, the state actually cast the deciding vote to end Prohibition in 1933. But it wasn’t until 2006 that High West opened its doors and became Utah’s first legal distillery in more than 130 years. Visit the venue to see where the four signature whiskies are distilled and then stop at the saloon to try a flight.

My personal favorite right now is their Alta Ruby, which combines High West's own double rye, Aperol, strawberry cinnamon, banana liquor, lemon and prosecco, for a boozier take on an Aperol spritz.

High West – Famous distillery on Main Street – a must, especially if you like whiskey, which I don’t, but can appreciate how classic and western this place is. They don’t take resis so be prepared to wait, or peruse Main Street after you put your name down. The best time to show up is around 3 or 4pm, I always see people in ski boots!.

I feel like a visit to Park City wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the High West Distillery and Saloon (great food and a kids menu). This place gets very busy (does not take reservations), so you might be best to try off-peak times. Riverhorse on Main also get tops marks (has a kids menu), as does Yuki Yama sushi.

High West Distillery has a restaurant by Park City Main Street. But they also have the distillery, where the alcohol is made, in Wanship, about a 40-minute drive from Park City. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating areas, including a patio with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Founded in 2006 by a husband and wife team, visiting High West Distillery is a great way to support Park City family restaurants. Apart from great food, you can also tour the facilities and taste a whiskey flight. There’s a location in Park City and one a little outside of Park City, in Wanship.

$$$ Known as a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike, this Park Ave saloon is a short walk from the base of the Town Lift. Enjoy a custom cocktail made with local High West whiskey and a delicious entrée fit for a king. High West is hands down the most iconic restaurant in Park City.

High West Saloo nis a historic distillery steeped in Park City lore and features a laid-back, walk-in-only restaurant that we love. With an epic menu that features Schnitzel, Burgers, and Tacos, you can bet there’s something for everyone here. Don’t miss that 8-page cocktail menu either.

No Name Saloon - More expensive, not always the quickest service in my experience. I also saw they are remodeling their restaurant next door - not sure if it affects their food service at the Saloon. A lot of my friends / family that visit love this bar but its not my personal favorite.

A great exception to this is the High West Distillery and Saloon. There’s no fear of diluted Utah alcohol here!. This bar has various wines, cocktails and whiskeys with yummy flavours such as Dead Man’s Boots (OK that doesn’t sound so scrumptious but it was!).

High West Saloon is a fantastic gastropub near the Town Lift. They claim to be the only ski-in gastro distillery. It gets super busy, but you can put your name on the list and wander around until a table opens up.

And the High West saloon is right downtown, offering complementary tours daily. And if you’re up for a field trip, they have a distillery, which also offers free tours, just over 20 minutes away in Wanship, Utah.

High West Distillery CJ and I like this place for date night. You can also schedule a tour of the distillery which we have yet to do but it’s on our bucket list. The Vodka Lemonade and Dead Mans Boot is a must!

Our favorites for lunch or dinner were the shishito peppers, trout dip, pretzels, tacos, burgers and s’mores skillet. And our favorite drinks were the High West Lemonade, Dead Man’s Boots and the Old Fashioned.

I have delicious meals at places like High West Saloon, which boasts of being the world’s only ski-in, ski-out distillery (another benefit of skiing in Park City is that you can ski right into Main Street).

Uber rides from Park City Utah, to Salt Lake City (where I was staying) were long. If it wasn’t for that Uber ride, though, I would’ve avoided the bustling, overly popular spot.

Park City’s most infamous après ski spot is High West Saloon & Distillery. This is the ultimate end of day spot. It’s accessible via the Quit’N Time trail near the Town Lift.

Some of our favorite spots to stop for drinks included the famous No Name Saloon (worth the wait, I promise!), High West Distillery, and Old Town Cellars, a local winery.
