When I attended the Michelin Award ceremony in Miami last month, I was surprised to see only one Orlando restaurant, Z Asian, serving food at the reception on the concourse of LoanDepot Park, where the event was held. Then again, seeing as how this was Miami’s gig – Orlando hosted last year at the Ritz-Carlton; they’ll be in Tampa next year – perhaps it was unusual to have even one Central Florida participant. And the area was well represented by the staff of Z Asian and its owners, Hien Q. Pham and his wife and the restaurant’s chef Huong Nguyen, who operated a food station overlooking third base.

In addition to the stars and Bibs, Michelin added a list of 23 "recommended" Orlando restaurants to their guide: Pizza Bruno, Kabooki Sushi, Se7en Bites, Sticky Rice, Shin Jung, Maxine’s on Shine, Tori Tori, Hawkers, The Polite Pig, Black Rooster Taqueria, The Pinery, Bacán, Selam, Ravello, Citricos, Primo at JW Marriott Grande Lakes Orlando, Sear + Sea at JW Marriott Bonnet Creek, and Four Flamingos, A Richard Blais Florida Kitchen at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress.

Z Aisan Vietnamese Kitchen is one of the latest to join the Mills 50 lineup of eateries in what is historically the center of the city’s Asian community. For a long time, each new Vietnamese restaurant that opened in the area seemed no different than those that had come before. The menus were the same, which is to say voluminous and repetitive, and even the decors seemed cookie cutter and stereotypical.

Seven Central Florida restaurants received Bib Gourmand recognition: Bombay Street Kitchen, Domu, Papa Llama, the Ravenous Pig, the Strand, Swine & Sons, and Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen. Domu was highlighted in our List of Great Restaurants Near Walt Disney World, as were a handful of Michelin’s recommended locations below.

Z Asian - Vietnamese Kitchen in Orlando is truly a gem among the Vietnamese restaurants in the city. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with an elegant and fine dining atmosphere, complete with soothing Vietnamese music playing in the background. The service at Z Asian was truly outstanding.

Seven more local restaurants were recognized with a “Bib Gourmand,” or restaurants of note that serve a full menu of starters, main courses, and desserts for roughly $49, including Bombay Street Kitchen, Domu, Papa Llama, The Ravenous Pig, The Strand, Swine and Sons, and Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen.

Excellent pho and street food (perhaps a bowl of apple snails in a lemongrass hot pot) await at Z Asian. Finish on a sweet note with a scoop of homemade jackfruit chili nut ice cream at Filipino ice creamery, Sampaguita.
