Kadence is located inside a nondescript black building that looks more like a pop-up modern art museum than an actual restaurant. Inside, however, you’ll find some of the best sushi in the city, rather than installations that’ll make you wonder what is and isn’t “art.” Reservations at this nine-seat sushi counter in Audubon Park are hard to come by, but if you can’t wait three months to eat here, they also serve Japanese breakfast on the weekends and chirashi bowls filled with sashimi, vegetables, and sushi rice to go. Make this your first stop the next time you’re in Orlando.

Four Orlando-based restaurants were awarded the coveted Michelin star at last night’s invitation-only ceremony, held at the Ritz-Carlton; Capa at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando, Kadence, Knife and Spoon at Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes, and Soseki. Seven more local restaurants were recognized with a “Bib Gourmand,” or restaurants of note that serve a full menu of starters, main courses, and desserts for roughly $49, including Bombay Street Kitchen, Domu, Papa Llama, The Ravenous Pig, The Strand, Swine and Sons, and Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen.

Other Orlando accolades: Chichi Spanish steakhouse Capa, along with omakase houses Soseki and Kadence, retained their one Michelin star rating; chichi, not-so-Spanish steakhouse Knife & Spoon lost theirs; Kaya received a special "Green Star Award" for local sourcing and sustainability; Justin Levaughn accepted the "Exceptional Cocktails Award" for Otto's High Dive; and Israel Perez, restaurant manager and sommelier for Victoria & Albert's, was handed the "Service Award.

When I reviewed Kadence, nearly a year ago, I said that the omakase sushi bar was perhaps one of the best restaurants in Orlando, even though – or maybe because – it did not match the criteria for what we consider a restaurant to be. One doesn’t make a reservation but rather purchases a (nonrefundable) ticket for a specified time to sit at one of nine seats. There is no menu; customers are served what the chef prepares, all receiving each dish at the same time.
