Reviews Summary

Hopscotch is celebrated for its inventive American cuisine with a Japanese twist, featuring standout dishes like fried chicken and unique burgers. Diners rave about the creative cocktails and charming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for brunch or a date night. However, some reviews mention blandness or excessive saltiness in certain dishes, and occasional inconsistencies in service.

"We got in for brunch this weekend and it was everything I expected. Amazing food and service. One of the best brunch spots around!

This place is an Oakland treasure. The oysters are always a highlight and the craft cocktails are amazing. This is a date night place that we are always so happy with.

Tonight in particular was amazing because they had both a wedding party and a birthday party and our service was completely unaffected. Truly amazing. Great job team! We look forward to our next Hopscotch date night."

"Pretty food but honestly bland and mediocre. I had the Hopscotch Brunch at the Itani pop-up event by surprise and was severely disappointed. The salad I was given was nearly impossible to pick up with a fork, the pork belly benedict was not seasoned and bland, and the best part of my meal was an accompanying fruit salad and my yuzu lemonade."

Cessia Castillo

"Nice brunch / dinner spot with a Southern food mixed with some Japanese influence. We had the fried chicken with biscuits which came with a generous portion of fried chicken cooked Karaage style and a nice savory gravy over well made biscuits. The Pork Belly Eggs Benedict was also quite lovely but more or less what you'd expect from a well executed version of this dish - hollandaise with a lemony twist and thick cut pork like bacon and a nice slice of challah. The donuts were outstanding and worth getting, they came with a unique and not too sweet butterscotch sauce on the side that I hadn't tried elsewhere. We had mimosas and they were well made and a good deal for the carafe.

The service could have been better. The waiter was quite friendly but not very attentive and maybe checked in with us twice and never did bring the desert menu. We just grabbed one ourselves after waiting for a while.

Overall it was a good reliable spot that executed the dishes well but you won't be finding anything that's going to raise the bar flavor wise."

The 10 Best Restaurants In Oakland, California

Located in Oakland’s uptown neighborhood, Hopscotch serves upscale Californian cuisine with a Japanese twist. The food is decadent, but not too pretentious for the average diner. Menu items include girdled beef tongue on top of the house-ground burger with sesame aioli, soba pappardelle with leeks, spinach, mascarpone and a jidori egg, or black cod marinated in sake lees and served with pickled turnips and broccolini tempura.

Best Restaurants In Oakland: The 12 Coolest Places to Eat Right Now

It seems like this once ignored neighborhood gets all of the attention these days, and why not?. It’s got a handy BART stop, a tight cluster of some of Oakland’s best new bars and restaurants, and the beautifully restored Fox Theater. Hopscotch is a standout among the Uptown growth, a tiny little diner with one of Oakland’s most delightfully unusual menus (think creative, Japanese-tinged seasonal American cuisine).

California Through My Lens

Nine Dishes you Need to Eat in Oakland

I know that a lot of people will not be a fan of this recommendation, but I would say, “don’t knock it till you try it.” I already love oysters, so it was an easy win for me, but my wife doesn’t, and when she had them here she was equally impressed. If you have never had Sea Urchin, I’d describe it as the Foie Gras of the sea; in that, you don’t want to order it at a cheap place, and when it is good, it is magnificent. This is a small one-bite dish, but it will leave you wanting more after you see how well each element of the dish compliments the others.

Bay Area Bites Guide to 12 Classic American Fried Chicken Spots in Oakland and Berkeley

One of Uptown Oakland’s most beloved restaurants is Hopscotch, which has a menu of local ingredients combined in surprising ways that always work, often with a Japanese bent. While I excluded karaage from this list, Hopscotch certainly makes the cut because the concept is classic American-fried. You don’t know there’s anything else going on until you take a bite and sense a hint of ginger in the batter, and the sides of baked beans and pickled purple cabbage don’t give away the secret.

I love Hopscotch’s brunch for a few reasons, mainly for their diverse brunch menu. Their menu features a range of Asian and American fused dishes such as Kimchee Fried Rice & Shoyu Eggs, Smoked Salmon Benedict and my personal favorite, the Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Biscuits (without the pork sausage gravy and with scramble eggs, cast iron skillet potatoes and mixed salad.)
