Reviews Summary

White Horse Tavern is celebrated for its unparalleled historic atmosphere and excellent food, with dishes like Beef Wellington and Lobster Bisque receiving high praise. While many highlight the romantic ambiance and attentive service, some reviews mention that certain dishes, like the vegetable plate, can be bland, and service can occasionally be inattentive.

"The oldest tavern in the United States did not disappoint. Absolutely remarkable atmosphere, incredible food, fantastic drinks, and great service. We had the oysters, bacon wrapped scallops, two cocktails that I cannot remember the names of, steak frites, and beef Wellington. Everything tasted great and the beef Wellington was cooked to absolute perfection. Highly recommend checking this out and encourage you to make reservations in advance."

Devin Bilski

"Scotch eggs were about as flavorful and perfectly cooked as you can expect. Clam chowder was excellent. We also ordered endive salad blackened sword fish and beef Wellington. Bread pudding and candy bar rounded out the meal. Smokey Old fashioned to start. Everything was impeccably prepared. Best meal we had for this trip. Service was warm and attentive."

SCSS 98

"We visited here from out of state with high expectations. Every single one of them was exceeded. Good wine selection and great service. Make sure you make a reservation!

The dress code is clearly unenforced but perhaps it varies depending on different times of the night or who is hosting. My preference is just to commit to one of them, either drop the dress code or enforce it. Include a note with the reservation, & put up a sign outside so it is harder to claim ignorance regarding the website info.

The field greens had an exquisite minty + turmeric taste with candied nuts and it was a perfect appetizer! The lobster ravioli and lobster bisque are similar so make sure you want them both if ordering both. The duck legs were crispy on the outside and they were so good!
Would recommend going early so you can park in their free parking lot, I’m sure it gets full. One of the dining rooms is upstairs so be sure to request what you need in advance."

Restaurants in Newport County and East Bay

The first tavern opened here in 1673—and ever since, the premises have served, in turn, as a tavern, boardinghouse, restaurant, and even a meetinghouse for Colonial Rhode Island's General Assembly. Today, the tavern provides an intimate fine-dining experience, the mood set by the low dark-beam ceilings, uneven plank floors, and four still-working fireplaces; an outside patio is a recent addition.

Barring a couple of short breaks (like when the British occupied Newport during the Revolutionary War), The White Horse Tavern has been open for 350 years. It was known as the “birthplace of the businessman’s lunch” in colonial days, so folks in powdered wigs often held court over trenchers of bread between rounds of beer.

Haunted Spots In Newport | Gilded Age Architecture & Parks

The oldest, and supposedly most haunted tavern in America, White Horse Tavern opened in 1673 at which point it served as a courthouse; a meeting place for Colonists, British soldiers, pirates, sailors and founding fathers; and lastly, a private residence. According to legend, and some eye-witness tavern employees, several ghosts still occupy the tavern, with accounts of being tapped on the shoulder and footsteps overheard from nearby empty rooms reported often. Spirits are said to include an elderly man in Colonial garb, a seamen who previously died on the premises, and a female reported floating above one of the dining tables.

The question is, how do you not NOT ‘gram one of the oldest restaurants in America when in Newport?. With its creaky wide-plank floors, exposed original beams, glowing sconces and multiple hearths, you get the distinct feeling not much has changed since White Horse Tavern opened in 1673. Dinner unfolds nightly in the main dining room as well as on the second floor, where the views are worth navigating the narrow, centuries-old staircase where Jackie Kennedy could be seen holding court at "her table," but the coziest place to dine is in the bar.

Where (and what) to eat in Newport this summer

Newport’s White Horse Tavern bills itself as the oldest operating restaurant in the country and the 10th oldest in the world.
