No views and no credit cards at Scales and Shells (Italian seafood and pasta), but good quality eats and not killer expensive depending on what you get. Flo's Clam Shack is a no-frills stand in line clam shack spot with okay prices, and depending on what table you score you may have a bit of a patio style view -- decent fried seafood, no waitress service. Brick Alley Pub and Salvation Cafe are decent and cheap family style pub grub spots, no views.

For bars, no "insider" recommendations are needed; since Newport has everything from sort of upscale Jazz clubs to alternative rock to local pub-type establishments, all you do is walk down Thames around 9:00 pm and look through the bar windows or listen at a doorway to see if it is what you are looking for.

For 35 years, Scales & Shells has enticed seafood-searching visitors with down-home dining in a casual setting. Just outside of Newport’s busy downtown, the Emilia-Romagna–influenced restaurant has an open kitchen and extensive bar that invite conversation and diner interaction. Changing daily, the menu is written on a chalkboard that includes the oysters of the day as well as dinner specials.

Scales and Shells: This busy, sometimes noisy, but always excellent restaurant serves as many as 15 types of superbly fresh wood-grilled fish – the cooks occasionally send your waitperson to your table with your future dinner in tow so you’ll know exactly how fresh it is. Similar offering are available in a more formal setting upstairs and Upscales. Reservations not available.

If it lives in the ocean Scales and Shells can grill it: everything from monkfish, lobster, bluefish, trout, red snapper, scallops. Appetizers and entrees range from scampi, clam pizza, seafood pasta, to classic fish and chips and changing specials. Don't expect a fancy menu and online reservation system: Scales and Shells is a traditional seafood restaurant.

Scales & Shells —One of the first Newport restaurants I've ever been to, this is a good spot for Italian classics with fresh local seafood such as the lobster fra diavolo for two and linguine with clam sauce. Upstairs a new lounge for cocktails and light Italian fare is open on the weekends.

One of our favorite seafood restaurants in Newport, RI is Scales and Shells, a casual eatery that will satisfy not just the seafood lover in you but any accompanying vegetarians you may be traveling with!

There’s no kids’ menu but early in the evening they’re kid-friendly. You can make a kid’s dinner from sides or half-portions. Tiny Traveler had two sides: spaghetti and grilled asparagus.

Seafood would be good (since east coast seafood is different from theirs) but Scales and Shells sounds a bit too loud and rowdy. Any chance at good portuguese or italian flavors?
