Reviews Summary

St. Anselm is praised for its exceptionally high-quality steaks and flavorful, creative sides that stand out from typical steakhouse fare. Diners appreciate the cozy, intimate atmosphere and friendly service, though some reviews mention dishes being overly salty or the steak being undercooked. The price is considered reasonable for the quality offered, making it a strong contender among NYC steakhouses.

"Wow, where do I even begin?
We came here based on a recommendation from a travel blogger whose previous tips never disappointed us — and this time, she absolutely nailed it.
The steak was as tender as a cloud, cooked perfectly medium just as we asked. You could really taste the quality of the meat, it was so flavorful that it didn’t need anything beyond salt and pepper. We didn’t even touch the butter they placed on top because it was already so delicious.
For starters, we ordered the sardines dish, and it was absolutely delicious, a real winner. The other appetizers I saw on nearby tables also looked amazing.
As a side dish, we ordered the mashed potatoes, they were really tasty, with a unique seasoning that I think included garlic and parsley. It was something special and very flavorful.
The service was excellent — the waitstaff were kind, friendly, and attentive.
Bottom line: if you’re a fan of high-quality steaks, I highly recommend coming here. Yes, the bill wasn’t cheap, but it was worth every dollar.
We had gone to another steakhouse earlier on the trip that was maybe less expensive, but we left completely disappointed — both with the food and the service. That meal felt like a waste of money."

"Had a lovely meal.
The chicken is a whole bird.it was the best chicken I ever had. It tasted like chicken and a savory sweet flavor. Mashed potato was a little salty. Greens were yummy. The fingerlings were really good. Toffee pudding was decadent."

Margaret Kim

"Delicious steaks. Had the hanger and the tomahawk with various sides. Meat on point, not overly salty, perfectly cooked. Sides delicious, no real misses for me at all. Very relaxed atmosphere and casual. Service anything but casual, very attentive staff and accommodating."

Williamsburg’s other steakhouse is much less famous than Peter Luger, but it might actually be better. The humble and intimate exposed brick and wood space is welcoming and comfy, while the menu boasts new takes on comfort food of the meaty variety, with dishes like the Ax Handle Rib Eye coming in at 45-65 oz; New York Strip au poivre; Sweet Tea Brined Bobo Chicken; and a Bourbon Brined Pork Porterhouse. Vegetables are expertly prepared with options like Pan-Fried Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli with Ranch, and Long Beans w/ Garlic Butter.

This modest spot grills high-quality meat and fish, all sustainably and ethically sourced, at very reasonable prices. The sides, ordered à la carte, deserve special attention: The spinach gratin is dependably hearty, and the seasonal special of delicata squash with manchego (cheese from sheep’s milk) is divine. Come early or risk a long wait, though you can get a drink from the owners’ bar, Spuyten Duyvil, next door.

A railroad room with a small bar on one end and a chef's counter on the other, St. Anselm doesn't look like much from the outset. But Joe Carroll's reinvention of the classic steakhouse puts out some of the best food in the borough. Carroll, who also owns both the beer bar next door, Spuyten Duyvil, and the barbecue mainstay across the street, Fette Sau, has stayed true to his version of the steakhouse model by compiling a relatively robust collection of wines.

As counterprogramming for the nightclub-y steakhouses of the early aughts, a breed of more austere, slightly Germanic steakhouses opened. The best of them is St. Anselm, housed in an unassuming building on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg. Though it might lack the more luxe accoutrement — there are no banquettes, waitstaff is militantly informal — the meat speaks for itself.
