Buzzing with urban-farming fund-raisers, local brewers pouring their ales and food-world luminaries fresh off Heritage Radio interviews, this sprawling hangout has become the unofficial meeting place for Brooklyn's sustainable-food movement. Opened in 2008 by Chris Parachini, Brandon Hoy and Carlo Mirarchi, Roberta's features its own rooftop garden, a food-focused Internet-radio station and a kitchen that turns out excellent, locally sourced dishes, like marinated cucumbers with spicy seeds or oxtail lasagna made with horseradish. The pizzas—like the Cheesus Christ, topped with mozzarella, Taleggio, Parmesan, black pepper and cream—are among the borough's best.

Tucked behind the dilapidated cinder-block exterior of an old warehouse, Roberta’s is Bushwick’s center for pizza. Even after nearly 12 years in the neighborhood, the pizzeria still touts long waits for its famed Bee Sting pie (crisped-up dough painted with tomato sauce, mozzarella, soppressata and honey) and a growing roster of wood-fired pies, plus a slew of veggie-centric small plates, pastas and bigger entrees like braised tripe and skate wing. Additions have expanded Roberta’s from a mere restaurant to one with an attached bakery, takeout and winter garden – along with Blanca, a hidden restaurant run by the same team, housed out back.

Smack dab in the middle of the plaza above Penn Station, this Manhattan outpost of Roberta's is surrounded by Madison Square Garden and towering Gap ads, illuminating it like a hovering UFO. The third-story rooftop restaurant is a far cry from the pizza institution’s original Bushwick location, but the Neapolitan pies are exactly the same, and their bubbly, blistered crusts are Roberta’s greatest asset. There’s plenty of seating inside, but sit outside if weather permits.

Roberta’s burst onto the Bushwick dining scene more than a decade ago and it’s grown more beloved with every passing year. Perhaps predicting the phone-eats-first phenom, both the space and the pies are photogenic. Choose from a roster of expertly crafted options like the Famous Original, swiped with red sauce, melty mozzarella, sharp Caciocavallo and parmesan and a sprinkle of chili flakes and oregano, or design your own with twenty-some-odd toppings.

A neighborhood groundbreaker since it opened in 2008, this restaurant in a former garage is a must-visit, especially for pizza connoisseurs. The menu emphasizes hyper-local ingredients—there’s a rooftop garden—and the wood-fired pizzas have innovative combinations of toppings like fennel, pork sausage, and pistachio. There are also pastas and meaty mains, along with a vegetarian-friendly option or two.

With locations in Bushwick and South Williamsburg, Roberta’s is one of the best artisanal pizza joints in the city, known for its wood-fire pies and epic brunch; the scrambled eggs, made with kale, pecorino, and sunflower spelt, are a real treat, as are the bacon, egg, and cheese croissants. Pair apps like duck prosciutto, cheese plates, and sticky bun ice cream sandwiches with your pizza; go traditional with margherita or branch out with other types like the Bee Sting, made with tomato, mozzarella, soppresata, chili, basil, and honey. Don’t be fooled by the decidedly ugly facade of the restaurant—the food at Roberta’s is truly first class. Should you find yourself in the neighborhood on a lazy weekend morning, the brunch pizza should not be missed and the bee sting pizza with chili, honey and soppressata is a truly crave-worthy menu staple that might have been responsible for starting the whole hot honey trend.

This iconic Bushwick pizzeria looks like a grungy dive bar on the outside – the entrance is wallpapered with stickers and graffiti, and the building itself feels like an abandoned warehouse, with shipping containers as makeshift walls. But the space has charm, in a rock-and-roll sort of way, and, despite the no-frills venue, Roberta’s can still draw a long line for their pizza. Once you snag a seat, order the signature “Bee Sting” pizza, topped with mozzarella, large slices of soppressata, and a drizzle of hot honey.

Roberta’s may be evolving (you can even buy Roberta’s frozen pizzas online and at retailers), but to me, it will always live in spirit and fact on a wee patch of Brooklyn terroir. Walk in and cross your fingers (no reservations, waits can stretch past an hour during busy times), and grab a spot at a let’s-call-em-rustic picnic table, preferably within gawking distance of the hulking woodfired oven, out of which gorgeous charred pizzas will emerge.

Located in a former cinderblock warehouse in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, Roberta's offers a creative environment for up to 120 seated guests for your wedding or rehearsal dinner. Praised by the New York Times and celebrated by the city’s food loving scenesters, the relentlessly trendy Roberta’s is tucked away in a stretch of Bushwick that falls beyond the typical tourist track. Don’t let that deter you, though. Through its entryway you’ll find a veritable carnival of pizza: pies flying out of the hot oven, hungry masses waiting to be seated, and some seriously heavenly aromas wafting through the dining room.

Even though it is housed in what looks like a ramshackle building from the outside and is far out in Brooklyn, in Bushwick, it is so worth going there!. (And go to the original one in Bushwick if you can – the vibe at their new location on the Williamsburg waterfront is not the same). I totally understand why Beyonce and Jay-Z eat here regularly – I’d eat here every week, if I could.
