Grimaldi’s is one of the most famous coal brick-oven pizzerias in the city and was just a five-minute walk from our Brooklyn Heights housesit. I’d seen the crowds outside the restaurant on my runs, as there seem to be people waiting in front of Grimaldi’s as soon as they open and pretty much non-stop until they close, and one day we finally joined the long line of people waiting out front. Tourists flock here, so I wanted to see if the hype is worth it.

If you didn’t have pizza earlier, I recommend Juliana’s – the pizza is even better than next-door Grimaldi’s (in fact, it was voted the best pizzeria in the entire U.S. in 2015 on TripAdvisor) but it’s not often in the guidebooks so there’s usually no line. If you do this, be sure to save room for dessert at the delicious Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory just down the street.

A lot of people (locals as well as tourists) consider this to be the best destination for pizza anywhere in Brooklyn. While it can be crowded, it has a reputation for fast service and yummy food.

The white cast-iron building on the corner of Old Fulton and Front Streets (look for the line of people outside) is the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, which some claim is New York’s best.

DUMBO’s classic old-school pizzeria, Grimaldi’s is a must-visit. The aforementioned Roberta’s is another sure-fire bet, while Di Fara’s is nothing short of a Brooklyn icon.

If you come to legendary Grimaldi’s under the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait. But the coal-fired brick oven pie is absolutely worth it.
