Reviews Summary

Frankel's Delicatessen & Appetizing is highly praised for its outstanding pastrami sandwiches and creative bagel offerings. Diners love the tender, flavorful meat and the fresh, well-prepared ingredients. The modern, retro atmosphere and friendly staff contribute to a positive dining experience. Some mention that the restaurant can get busy and items may sell out, suggesting an earlier visit or ordering ahead.

"I’ve heard so much about this spot and yeah, never got around to it because they only open till 3 PM each day. Today I finally made it and it was well worth the weight.

Relatively small establishment however staff is huge on courtesy. I tried their famous hot pastrami on rye with mustard and boy I was simply blown away. Each bite was super tender, juicy and so flavorful. I was also impressed the rye bread did not fall apart easily.

Definitely a must visit and it’s definitely a top five pastrami sandwich in NYC."

Jesse Yuan

"Great spot for delish, authentic bagels and the like! I had the classic (Lox and all the fixings) and I was good till dinner!! The staff were super nice and helpful. I spilled my tea as I was sitting and they were quick to help me clean it up and promptly provided me a replacement! Also... additional Kudos to the owner for not skimping on paper products! The bagel comes wrapped in sturdy classic deli paper which is perfect for eating on the go! Substantial napkins are plentiful and do the trick given the generous cream cheese servings! Frankel's was a great find on our weekend to Brooklyn!"

Laurie Harrington

The 10 best New York delis for bagels, pastrami and appetizing

Raised on Jewish-food landmarks like Barney Greengrass and Zabar’s, brother-owners and Upper West Side natives Zach and Alex Frankel (former chef at Jack’s Wife Freda and half of Brooklyn synth-pop duo Holy Ghost!, respectively) preserve the traditions of their lox-peddling elders with menschy earnestness. There are no revisionist latkes or molecular-gastro matzo balls here—just the deli staples they, and New York, grew up on,like malt-sweet, hand-rolled bagels and smoked fish (kippered salmon, sable).

The Best Jewish Delis in NYC - New York

A retail shop and Jewish deli counter with around 15 seats on the Greenpoint/Williamsburg border, Frankel’s was opened by two brothers, one of whom is in the band Holy Ghost!. We’ll give him a pass for that exclamation point since he’s partly responsible for this place. The food here is absurdly good.

The ultimate guide to New York's best Jewish delis

The crowd of customers waiting in line for Frankel's in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn is young and especially trendy. Although the deli may not have the prestigious heritage of some of the older businesses on the list, Frankel's has had a phenomenal reputation since its opening in 2016. The Frankel brothers, who grew up in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, dreamed of bringing a contemporary twist to the classic deli, and their vision is immediately reflected upon entering the place - the regular white tiled walls got a modern revamp, the food is exhibited through a glass display case, and glass pendant lights hang from the ceiling.

13 Best Jewish Delis In NYC, Ranked

The clientele that lines up to get a taste of the Jewish deli fare on offer at Frankel's in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood is notably young and hip. While it might not have the tenure of some of the other long-standing delis on the list, Frankel's became an instant classic when it opened in 2016. Started by two native New Yorkers, a pair of brothers who grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side, Frankel's borrowed their design aesthetic from the traditional Jewish delis, with white tiled walls, refrigerated display cases, and frosted glass lamps hanging from the ceiling.

Although it opened in 2016, the space is reminiscent of a bygone era, with vintage photographs and colorful signage by the legendary Coney Island sign painter Sam Moses. Expect to see classics on the menu, from potato latkes to hot pastrami Reubens, plus creative specialty sandwiches such as “The Nettie,” made with Eastern Nova smoked salmon, dill cream cheese, horseradish beets, and red onions. Though not authentically Jewish, this bacon, tomato, and scallion cream cheese bagel is perfect if you're not quite ready to commit to lox.

My 24 Favorite Restaurants in Brooklyn

Frankel’s – This hip Jewish style deli right by McCaren Park in Greenpoint is actually owned by Holy Ghost’s Alex Frankel, a band I saw at Bowery Ballroom years ago on Halloween. Right before I moved back to Austin, I strutted in while I was in the hood and took a postcard that says, “You don’t have to be Jewish to love Frankel’s,” which still resides on my current fridge. On one trip back, I got the Whitefish Salad on toasted Challah Bread and hung out with my thick sandwich on a park bench.

Back when Frankel’s Delicatessen & Appetizing first opened in 2016, our colleagues at the Jewish Telegraphic Agency called the Greenpoint spot “the coolest restaurant in New York.” This isn’t just about vibes — Frankel’s is seriously tasty, too, and their pastrami, egg and cheese sando earned a spot on the Times’ list, where “each mouthful yields just the right combination of silky egg; smoky, gently spiced meat; and melty pulls of American cheese.
